JOB SUMMARY:

In collaboration with the Trauma Program Leadership, the Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator RN is responsible for coordination and implementation of the Trauma Performance Improvement Program which encompasses all areas and disciplines of the organization that participate in the care of injured patients. Participates in the ongoing monitoring of injured patients, from pre-hospital through discharge with the purpose of facilitating continuity and appropriateness of care, as well as collection, analysis, trending and benchmarking of data and outcomes Collaborates with program, and organizational leadership to assure compliance with trauma standards and guidelines.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

  • BSN Required; MSN preferred.
  • CERTIFICATION
  • TNCC, required
  • TCRN required within 6 months of hire

EXPERIENCE

Minimum of 3 years of Emergency/Critical Care/Trauma experience

1 year of performance improvement experience preferred

PREREQUISITE SKILLS

  1. Must have a good working knowledge, ability to communicate and educate: The fundamentals and standard practices of trauma nursing. College of Surgeons Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient
  2. Ability to positively engage and educate in one-on-one and group presentation settings, and to create effective educational materials and competencies using various resources.
  3. Demonstrated experience exercising initiative, creativity, resourcefulness, and flexibility in problem solving and patient advocacy
  4. Ability to research, interpret, and analyze data from hospital specific applications, and produce solutions to improve processes.
  5. Ability to handle stress, and effectively work with physicians, management, and patient care staff in support of special projects and auditing.
  6. Must have strong leadership skills, be compassionate, and have excellent communication skills.
  7. A working knowledge of and abilty to educate on, electronic medical record nursing documentation.
  8. Excellent task management and project coordination skills
  9. Strong orginazational and problem solving skills
  10. Ability to work independently

LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • TNCC, required
  • TCRN required within 6 months of hire
  • ATCN within 12 months of hire

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL (not modifiable) 

  1. Conducts concurrent and retrospective primary review using established critera and trauma indicators and identifies and documents adverse events, variances in care, complications and pt safety issues. Refers PI issues and concerning chart reviews to the trauma program manager and trauma medical director for review and peer evaluation
  2. Develops and assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of actions plans for process improvement and documents loop closure.
  3. Oversees the collection, tracking and benchmarking of trauma PI issues related to patient care and system development.
  4. Tracks all Trauma PI issues from all trauma units and disciplines, develops or assists others in developing action plans and ensures follow through on these plans
  5. Analyzes trauma registry data on a regular basis to assess accuracy of data and to identify areas of improvement, education, and injury prevention.
  6. Attends trauma related meetings and prepares cases for Peer Review
  7. Serves as an active member of trauma specific committees and is an active participant in strategic planning for the Trauma Program.Participates in the Trauma Registry in a support role.
  8. Assists in the development and maintenance of standards, policies and procedures, protocols, performance improvement activities and evaluation of the effectiveness of action plans as required for the Trauma Program.
  9. Participates in the TQIP program and meetings.
  10. Participates in county and regional meetings as needed.

SECONDARY (modifiable)

  • Attends appropriate training seminars and conferences to maintain current knowledge of the field.
  • Develops and facilitates injury prevention activities
  • Other duties as assigned.
