Job Description

The material handler plays a vital role in running an efficient and safe production operation. The objective of this role is to support production team members by ensuring they have what they need to keep donations flowing to the sales floor without interruption. In addition to donation and merchandise routing activities described in earlier sections, material handlers are also responsible for the following activities.

  • Managing Trash Disposal 
  • Swapping Out Salvage
  • Stocking Materials 

The following procedure is the day-to-day operations of this position:

  • Use proper safety measures when handling merchandise such as eye protection and cut proof gloves.
  • Retrieve an empty trash cart from the designated area and take it to the workstation.
  • Swap out the full trash cart with an empty trash cart.
  • Roll the full trash cart to the trash compactor or dumpster, put on eye protection, and dispose of the contents by safely tipping the cart. Return the emptied trash cart to its designated location in the processing area.
  • Retrieve a pallet jack or forklift from the material handling equipment area.
  • Retrieve an empty prepared salvage container and take it to the workstation.
  •  If the salvage container cannot be accessed, temporarily disassemble the processing station by moving the processing table and other equipment out of the way.
  • Remove the full salvage container and temporarily place it out of the way.
  • Move the empty replacement salvage container into position.
  • Reassemble the processing station.
  • Move the full salvage container to the designated area for outbound salvage near the dock.

Qualifications

  • Academic preparation at high school level preferred.
  • Forklift Certified
  • Must be 18 years of age or older, have command of the English language sufficient to communicate with customers, co-workers, and supervisors.
  • Must be able to work independently in a team environment
  • Must possess interpersonal skills with customers and employees.
  • Must possess problem solving skills.
  • Must have a desire to work with rehabilitation consumers, employees, and the public.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time, stoop, squat, bend and twist, reach for extended periods of time; push, pull, or lift up to 70 pounds in a safe manner.
  • Must be team oriented.
  • Must be reliable and dependable.
  • Must be able to pass alcohol/drug screening.
  • First Aid CPR Certified if assigned by Safety Coordinator (training provided)
