POSITION DESCRIPTION

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

SUPERVISES: High School Athletic Program Participants

JOB GOAL: To provide leadership, collaboration and coordination of the Marquette Senior High School athletic program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree preferred.

2. Minimum of five years of teaching and/or coaching experience required.

3. Athletic administration experience preferred.

4. Valid Michigan Certificate as a teacher or administrator, or a degree in Sports Administration / Management preferred.

5. Ability to interact positively with coaches, administrators, students, school staff, parents, Booster Club members, officials, fans and community members.

6. Proven ability to develop, organize, lead and implement programs.

7. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Athletic Program Management

1. Organize and administer the high school athletic program in accordance with School Board policy and any applicable rules and regulations.

2. Annually review programmatic needs to insure program consistency, efficiency, fiscal responsibility and compliance with all MAPS and MHSAA guidelines.

3. Represent MAPS at conferences and meetings of the MHSAA, leagues, Booster club, etc.

4. Schedule all high school athletic contests and officials, issue contracts for the contests, and maintain the appropriate records.

5. Arrange transportation for high school away contests.

6. Supervise high school athletic contests, employees and volunteers, and act as the host to officials and visiting schools. Arrange for personnel to supervise contests as needed.

7. Order all equipment and maintain a current inventory of all athletic equipment.

8. Provide leadership for and serve as liaison to high school athletic Booster Club, Spirit Store and Marquette City Parks and Recreation Department.

9. Prepare any athletic reports requested by the Superintendent, the MHSAA, and league conferences.

10. Foster good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program.

11. Work with the Community Education Director to organize and advertise any sport related programs in the MAPS Community School Academic and Enrichment Program Update flyer.

12. Coordinate the MSHS pool program offerings including lifeguards, custodial services, etc.

Coach / Athlete Management

1. Develop programs of orientation and in-service education for athletic coaches as required.

2. Verify each athlete’s eligibility according to established physical and academic requirements for participation in each sport in accordance with MHSAA and MAPS policies.

3. Attend all required home and State athletic events or assist in providing for appropriate supervision at each event.

4. Assure the physical examination of all athletes prior to the beginning of each season.

5. Coordinate recognition programs such as awards ceremonies, parent nights, and clinics.

6. Supervise and evaluate all coaches at the high school level.

7. Initiate the recruitment and selection of coaches and makes employment recommendations to the building principal.

8. Supervise the preparation and verification of all athletic eligibility lists.

9. Advise and ensure all coaches conform with Board, MHSAA, league policies and

regulations and with state and federal laws.

10. Encourage and instructs athletes, students and fans in good sportsmanship.

11. Maintain student files of athletic records such as physical examination forms, rosters, eligibility forms, pay to participate forms, accomplishments and awards.

12. Schedule athletic activities as well as all building sports-related activities, field and gym practice schedules, and use of all district practice facilities.

13. Maintain athletics website and social media platforms.

14. Communicate calendar and events to the public.

Managerial – Finance (each item below shall be in collaboration with the building principal and the business office)

1. Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing strategy including, but not limited to, the Booster Club, local business advertisements, fundraising and overall branding.

2. Develop plans for purchasing equipment and supplies in accordance with established District financial procedures.

3. Administer the rental process for the gym, fields, pool and tennis courts.

4. Work with the Assistant Superintendent in establishing and maintaining an annual athletic budget.

5. Administer the insurance program covering school athletes, and assume responsibility for all processing of reports and claims.

6. Supervise athletic funds, including the preparation of detailed operating budget reports for the athletic programs.

7. Proper handling of funds from all ticket sales and fund-raising events of the athletic program. Keep records of athletic scholarships awarded.

8. Manage the GoFan system for online purchases and payments.

9. Perform other duties as required / assigned.
