GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Interventional Cardiology Associates (ICA) Outpatient Practice
The Advanced Practice Provider develops, implements, and evaluates a program of specialized cardiovascular health care. The APP promotes a collaborative relationship among various health care professionals toward continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources. The APP serves as a role model for professional practice in the management of cardiovascular patients.
In accordance with the rules and regulations of the state of Massachusetts and the MGH governing Nurse Practitioner
(NP) practice, and under the general supervision of the Director of Advanced Practice Providers and the Medical Director for Interventional Cardiology, the APP provides direct care to patients in a high volume ambulatory clinical service. S/he develops, implements, and evaluates a program of specialized health care for a select patient population with cardiovascular disease. S/he/they will be intimately involved in direct care and education of patients, and should have experience working with patients requiring diagnostic and/or invasive procedures performed in a cardiac catheterization lab. The APP promotes a collaborative relationship among various health care professionals toward continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources.
The APP will see established patients independently in the ambulatory setting. He/she will perform clinical history and physical exam. He/she will review testing, manage medications and communicate results and direction to patients and family. He/She will work in conjunction with a physician colleague and will co manage a panel of cardiology patients.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
UNIVERSAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provides direct care to a select patient population in collaboration with the physician.
a) Performs and records the patient history and physical
b) Utilizes advanced nursing knowledge to identify, prevent or solve complex and/or recurring patient care problems.
c) Follows and manages patients (in collaboration with MDs) enhancing continuity of care.
d) Performs medically delegated aspects of patient care according to practice guidelines.
e) Collaborates with staff and physicians to facilitate a comprehensive plan of care and coordinate resources.
f) Writes orders which are in accordance with current guidelines.
g) Maintains and practices in accordance with practitioner guidelines per state and hospital regulations 2
2. Prescribe medications in accordance with guidelines developed with the supervising physician(s)
Scope of Prescriptive Practice
a) Prescribe Schedule II-VI medications in accordance with guidelines developed with supervising physician
b) Maintain a current license from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Division of Food and
Drugs
c) Maintain a certificate for prescribing controlled substances from the Drug Enforcement Administration
3. Monitors patient outcomes in accordance with defined standards of patient care.
a) Facilitates patient movement through the system and efficient use of resources through interdepartmental collaboration.
4. Serves as a resource to staff in area(s) of expertise.
5. Participates in the development of formal and informal educational programs.
6. Responsible for own professional growth and maintenance of required credentials.
a) Maintains the standards and educational requirements specific to the position and licensure.
7. Participates in MGH and Partners quality initiatives and/or hospital committees as assigned
Master's Degree in Nursing
Current Commonwealth of Massachusetts licensure as a registered nurse in the expanded role (NP)
Current Federal & Massachusetts licensure to dispense Controlled Substances
National certification in advanced practice nursing (NP)
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: (MUST be realistic, measurable, objective, and related to the essential functions of the job.)
Competency in Basic & Advanced Cardiac Life Support standards as established by the American Heart Association
Cardiovascular/interventional Cardiology experience preferred
Must be a highly motivated individual who will work in a collaborative manner with physicians and other clinicians
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Describe the conditions in which the work is performed.
Normal clinical conditions in a variety of hospital settings including physician medical office and acute care hospital settings.
Work schedule: Full-time (40 hours), days, Monday through Friday
