Position Type: Full-time

Pay: $110,000-$117,000 per year, dependent on experience and education

Schedule: Monday to Friday 9-5pm; occasionally work on off hours if required

Work Location: Hybrid; Home and Boston Office at least 1 day per week

Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant Controller to join our Finance team. The Assistant Controller will play a key role in supporting the Controller in managing the financial operations of the Organization. The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong background in accounting principles, experience in governmental accounting, and excellent organizational and communication skills. The Assistant Controller will report to the Controller and will interact with all levels of the Organization.

The candidate should have a strong understanding of appropriate policies and internal controls and be able to identify areas for improvement where needed.

Job Duties:

  • Assist the Controller in overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger maintenance;
  • Lead the month-end and year-end close process and ensure the proper and timely recording of financial transactions;
  • Ensure compliance with governmental accounting standards (e.g., GASB) and regulations governing the receipt, expenditure, and reporting of grant funds;
  • Participate in the preparation of monthly internal financial statements, reports, and analyses for accuracy and completeness;
  • Review journal entries and reconciliations to ensure accurate reporting and ledger maintenance.
  • Oversee financial management of grants to ensure compliance with Uniform Guidance.
  • Prepare and review reports required by grantor agencies and oversee the budgeting for grants.
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, forecast future results, and advise on potential financial planning decisions.
  • Alongside the Controller and CFO, collaborate with division managers to develop and monitor annual departmental budgets, incorporating governmental funding sources and restrictions;
  • Assist in the coordination of annual audits and manage the preparation of audit schedules, financial statements, and footnotes. and coordinate responses to auditor inquiries;
  • Supervise accounting staff, including performance evaluation, training, and hiring.
  • Provide leadership and technical guidance to staff in matters related to GASB, Uniform Guidance, and other accounting standards.
  • Identify opportunities for streamlining accounting processes, enhancing internal controls, and optimizing financial systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement process improvements and system upgrades.
  • Stay updated on regulatory changes and accounting standards, ensuring compliance and recommending adjustments as necessary;
  • Support Controller and CFO on any special ad hoc projects; and
  • Other duties as assigned .

Position Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree with a concentration in accounting or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • MBA, MSA or CPA highly preferred.

Experience:

  • Seven or more years of relevant experience;
  • Public accounting experience required;
  • Five or more years of management or supervisory experience;
  • Extensive knowledge of GASB standards and experience with financial reporting for public or governmental entities.
  • Proven experience with federal grant management and familiarity with Uniform Guidance.
  • Experience with implementing new systems and applications
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Experience working in Microsoft Business Central and Fluxx are a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards;
  • Knowledge of Uniform Guidance requirements
  • Ability to interpret and apply GASB standards and Uniform Guidance in complex scenarios.
  • Experience in managing grants from federal, state, and/or private funding sources, including grant budgeting, compliance monitoring, and reporting are a plus.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills;
  • An ability to work independently, identify and set priorities as well as quickly learn new systems;
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to manage relationships with staff and external partners.
  • Ability to analyze financial data
  • Strong computer skills, including Excel
  • Proficiency in accounting software and systems.
  • Desire to work in a dynamic and mission-driven environment; and
  • Experience working in state and local government or non-profit / public sector entities is preferred.
