POSITION SUMMARY:Manages and coordinates patient care and clinical personnel needs in Outpatient Otolaryngology. Continually assesses, diagnoses, plans, implements, and evaluates ambulatory health care services. Participates in the development and management of policies and procedures for maintenance and cleanliness of instruments, equipment, and exam space in Otolaryngology outpatient settingsESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:-Manages nursing services delivered within Outpatient Otolaryngology.-Provides instruction to patients and families when required including medications prescribed, dressings, home care, and follow-up care. Offers teaching tools as necessary; i.e. brochures, written handouts/instructions, audiovisual material.-Identifies clinical operational needs; manages appropriate level of equipment and supplies and monitors equipment maintenance. Assesses the environment and makes recommendations to ensure optimal patient comfort, safety and compliance with various regulatory bodies.-Assists in procedures including diagnostic evaluations, medical and/or surgical treatments. -Assists physicians with patients during scheduled office hours. Direct patients to exam rooms and assist with evaluation and examination as necessary. -Reviews records for completeness of medical information needs for exam; i.e. reports of cultures, biopsies, x-ray results, and other laboratory findings.-Assists in patient histories, and prepare patients for exams, treatment, and/or procedures.-Assists with developing and implementing processes to enhance clinic operations and practices for continuous quality improvement. Activities include but are not limited to: * Developing, documenting, implementing and monitoring written policies and procedures reflective of the ambulatory health care mission and objectives* Assisting in pre-operative evaluation and teaching* Developing and implementing learning opportunities and skill development for the nursing staff* Collaborating with nursing colleagues in ambulatory care to promote optimal utilization of nursing resources among the various services* Participating in direct patient care activities as a strategy for role modeling and information gathering.-Manages various nursing personnel/ staff actions including, but not limited to hiring, orientation, performance appraisals, and schedules. Manages the Medical Assistant duties and responsibilities including the daily: stocking of exam rooms, maintenance of equipment, instruments, and mechanics; cleaning/sterilizing/disinfecting equipment in accordance with Infection Control guidelines.-May review 'no-show' records to determine the necessity of future follow-up. Document 'no-show' status and the action taken in the medical record.-Receives patient telephone calls for nursing advice and triage appropriately.-Participates in project work and other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing. Licensed and currently registered as a professional nurse in Massachusetts. Minimum of 2 years of medical/surgical nursing experience is preferred.Experience required for advanced clinical and specialty-related areas. Demonstrated leadership activities; ability to work under stressful situations, and possess well-developed verbal and written communication skills.ACLS/PALS Certification Preferred.
