Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee quality and food safety technicians .
  • Responsible for overseeing and achieving set Food Safety and Quality KPIs
  • Conducts routine audits of food safety program, and maintains relevant FSQA documents, records, databases, product specifications and organics program, providing reports to management for continuous improvement
  • Acts as SQF Practitioner and PCQI back up, when necessary
  • Supports site Safety and Sanitation Supervisors as needed
  • When necessary, takes charge of critical food-safety & quality issues and promptly brings them to resolution while maintaining adherence to legislative and regulatory requirements
  • Conducts routine checks to verify proper record keeping by operations staff for Food Safety System and Organics Compliance Plan.
  • Reviews FSQA documentation, preharvest, finished product and EMP results and follows corrective actions plan for any result out of specification
  • Corrective Action and Preventative Measures – log and track of non-compliances and FSS incidences, do investigations, coordinate follow-up and bring outstanding issues to closure
  • Supervise FSQA Training – assist the food safety manager in development of training programs, conduct training classes, maintain training records
  • Prepares, organizes, leads and conducts follow-up for third-party, government, and customer audits
  • Acts as the back up emergency contact for the facility in Food Safety related issues including but not limited to recalls, power failures, potable water outages. Ensures issues are safely addressed
  • Ensures stock of food safety and quality inventory and supplies
  • Releases product and uploads results to vendor portals
  • Reports to Management – obtain, input, tabulate FSQA data and provide reports to Management as assigned
  • Performs and facilitates all FSQA pre-requisite programs and quality testing for finished products
  • Promote food safety culture
  • Monitors and updates programs in conjunction with other departments to meet objectives and change existing ones to ensure compliance as assigned
  • Acts as the back up for the Food Safety Manager.
  • Individual will be required to be contacted and available after hours to address emergencies and technical issue for a 24 x 7 operation
  • Other duties as assigned

Education/Background Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred (2 to 5 years’ experience as a QA specialist or supervisor in a Ready to Eat Facility)
  • High School diploma or GED required
  • One to three-year(s) supervisory experience
  • Holds certification or proper training in GMPs, HACCP, PSA, and PCQI

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Must pass Drug Test and Background Check
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record is required
  • Proficiency in use of English language with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally, present information and direction, and field questions from managers, employees and external contacts.
  • Spanish as a second language would be an asset
  • SQF practitioner certification is preferred
  • Experience in Sanitation considered an asset
  • Must be able to work independently and follow instructions as given
  • Understand company specific job-related applications of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration
  • Must be a high-performance team player and be willing to work in a dynamic, growing, demanding and fast-paced environment
  • Must be a self-starter and must work flexible hours including evenings and weekends
  • Must have ability to effectively follow-up and multitask, with strong personal time-management skills and effectively manage associated stress
  • Highly proficient in computer-use skills (MS Office: Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Willingness to work independently with minimal supervision and take ownership of job
  • Willingness to work with a high degree of professionalism and personal integrity
  • Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills. Need to be creative, adaptable and able to accurately handle out of the ordinary issues with a sense of urgency
  • Strong knowledge of local, state and federal laws and requirements to maintain compliance to all relevant statues and guiding principles (FDA, USDA, MIOSHA, OSHA, CFIA)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of general food-safety and organic program best practices, highly proficient in ability to document and work within GAPs, GMPs, HACCP, HACQP, SQF, SSOP, NOP & COR

Working Conditions:

  • Must occasionally lift or move up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time
  • Requires bending, twisting, stooping, squatting, repetitive motion
  • Work near moving equipment
  • Must be willing and can work in refrigerated environment (38-41 deg F) and greenhouse growing environment (80-100 deg F) for extended periods of time.
