About The RoleThe Director, Facilities Engineering and Special Projects position Is responsible for the planning and execution of terminal modernization, facility infrastructure and related projects for all terminal operations in the Pacific Division. Provides support to Matson Navigation Facilities and Equipment Engineering. Develops strategies and negotiates to execute contracts and lease agreements to support terminal improvements that meet operational needs, and business objectives. Evaluates engineering designs and specifications for facility projects and terminal operations. Coordinates closely with the operations teams at each facility to minimize operational impacts and improve facility resiliency and efficiency.
What you’ll do:
  • Manages and coordinates the Pacific Division terminal modernization projects, including design, development, execution of the plans and securing grants, permits, and resources.
  • Monitor terminal project expenditures (operating and capital) against budgets and provide monthly and quarterly reports with details on variances ( or -).
  • Interact with other departments and recommend policy and procedural changes, new and upgraded facility equipment and infrastructure, supplies, and services that will enhance capital asset reliability, reduce maintenance, and repair costs, enhance the safety of operations, and/or effectively improve Matson service to customers.
  • Develop plans for terminal modernization to effectively upgrade facility infrastructure and equipment improvements. Coordinate efforts and resources among the business units to meet operational objectives and overall corporate budget.
  • Maintain liaison with industries associates, professional societies, trade publications, governmental agencies, consultants, contractors, and labor unions as required to ensure that Matson’s capital assets and their maintenance and repair standards and program remain cost effective and current with state-of-the-art industrial technology.
  • In conjunction with the management of various Operations departments, continuously oversees and monitors terminal work areas to ensure compliance with Company, State and Federal safety regulations to maintain a safe working environment. In coordination with the Manager Safety and Workers Compensation, responds pro-actively to accident and damage reports to recommend changes or enforce procedures as needed.
  • Maintain involvement with government agencies (DOT, Harbors, HHUGS, etc.) to communicate Matson’s position with stakeholders. Coordinate with government resources as available to secure and track required grants, permits, etc.
  • Manage special engineering, terminal, facilities, and maintenance projects as assigned.
  • Coordinate and support internal resources for efficient execution of projects and policies.
  • Develop and implement strategies to support Matson initiatives for growth, operational efficiencies, and cost reductions.
  • Develop and maintain good relationships with clients, partners, and vendors.
  • Manage multiple capital improvement projects.
  • Assess and manage risk.
  • Resolve difficult or complex issues.
  • Adapt to various working conditions in varying locations across the Pacific.
  • Write reports and communicate effectively.
You have these skills:
  • Project management skills for major on-site upgrades.
  • Hands on management style; a demonstrated ability to lead by example.
  • Ability to pragmatically discern reasonable risks and act accordingly.
  • Results oriented with thorough execution and timely feedback.
  • Ability to develop and execute budgets to include detailed cost variance analysis.
  • Management: the ability to organize and manage multiple priorities, and plan.
  • Problem analysis and problem resolution at a functional level.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • A strong team player.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and internal computer operating systems and applications.
  • Working knowledge and experience with mechanical, electrical, electronic control, civil, structural and HVAC technologies and systems.
And these qualifications:
  • Engineering degree or other degree with equivalent work experience; graduate engineering, business, or finance degree preferred.
  • Experience with mechanical, structural, electrical, HVAC and civil engineering work and projects valued over $20million.
  • 10 years work experience in container shipping, marine terminal, transportation industry, or similar including at least 5 years of experience as project manager or lead.
  • Experience developing and successfully executing budgets and providing detailed cost variance analysis and recommendations to control costs.
  • 5 years experience in negotiating service and supply contracts, use and lease agreements.
  • Previous experience working in a union environment and operating under a collective bargaining agreement or similar experience.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a TWIC card.
You’re also great at:
  • Project management experience and ability to successfully lead a project team.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadline requirements.
  • Proven ability to obtain assistance and cooperation among varying levels within the organization and externally.
  • Working knowledge of labor laws, OSHA, EPA and other governing federal and Hawaii regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to apply acquired expertise and knowledge to solve business challenges and provide support or coaching to peers and team members.
  • Ability to develop business plans and execute on 1yr, 5yr, and 10yr timeframes.

  • Must be available 24/7
  • Business travel required
The annual salary range for this position in Hawaii is $132,400 - $191,800. The salary offered will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.
