Research University Practice

Our Research Universities Practice (RUP) is strategically positioned to support, expand, and diversify sponsored research activities for our public and private research universities with an R1 or R2 classification (Carnegie Classification Doctoral Universities—very high research activity or high research activity). McAllister & Quinn takes a blended, 360-degree approach, providing support across 4 service pillars: Strategic Intelligence, Research Development, Capacity Building, and Government Relation. This approach acts as a force multiplier, helping universities to compete for existing and forecasted sponsored opportunities and to cultivate new funding opportunities that serve the national interest.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

The Research Analyst will report directly to a Senior Managing Director and will support client service and team operations across the Research Universities Practice. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assist Directors and Managing Directors with client and project management, maintaining organized and accurate records using internal filing systems and data management tools.
  • Identify grant opportunities that align with clients’ needs. This includes:
  • Researching and monitoring suitable federal and foundation grant opportunities.
  • Liaising with Program Officers at federal agencies and foundations. 
  • Providing accurate written materials summarizing grant opportunities of interest.
  • Completing analyses on successful awardee characteristics to inform clients’ competitiveness. 
  • Researching an institution’s funding priorities, programs, and strategic plan to identify grant opportunities.
  • Participating in client meetings as requested to understand priorities and interest areas for grant prospecting.
  • Conduct substantive issue/topic area research related to trends, interests, and priorities of specific clients, federal agency and foundation grant programs and solicitations
  • Conduct analyses of federal legislation, including federal appropriations and authorizations related to science and technology, and other areas of client interest.
  • Obtain and retain working knowledge of the most client-relevant federal and foundation grant programs across agencies such as the Department of Education (DoED), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Energy (DOE), National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Commerce (DOC) and others. 
  • Generate and deliver high-quality, detailed, and accurate work products, including client deliverables in a fast-paced environment with fixed deadlines, such as:
  • Client federal and foundation grants forecasting reports for clients.
  • Comprehensive quantitative and qualitative analyses for individual grant competitions. 
  • Support the scheduling of client leadership meetings and the development of agendas. 
  • Support notetaking in meetings and the distribution of these notes after the meeting.
  • Support communications and concept development process for Congressionally Directed Spending Requests. 
  • If needed, schedule legislative meetings and liaise with congressional staff as appropriate. 
  • Support Business Development activities including:
  • Support with drafting and revising pitch materials
  • Scheduling and coordinating pitches with prospective clients
  • Emphasize and focus on a proactive, solutions-focused mentality, positivity, confident presentation of opportunities, and overall thoroughness with all client support and internal projects

Requirements

  • Minimum of four-year bachelor’s degree. 
  • 1-3 years professional experience in relevant role. Special consideration will be given to applicants who have direct experience with federal grant seeking and the federal budget.
  • Strong writing, organizational, and inter-personal communication skills.
  • Excellent writing / editing skills.
  • Superior attention to detail / organizational skills.
  • Ability to synthesize and accurately summarize lengthy and often complex materials.
  • Strong communication skills via phone, and in person interactions with clients, and colleagues. 
  • Positive attitude and self-motivated to learn new information and skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems when they arise and to work independently.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft suite programs, and Adobe.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Normal work hours are 8:30 am through 5:30 pm Monday through Friday, Eastern time zone.
  • Location: In-office three days a week in the Washington, DC office. 
  • Competitive benefits include: 401(k), defined-benefit pension plan, medical, dental, basic & voluntary life insurance, long-term disability and employee-directed vision, dependent care FSA, Healthcare HSA/FSA, and commuter benefits and phone stipend.
  • Salary consideration will be commensurate with experience, range for position is $58,000 - $62,000 annual base salary and discretionary bonus eligibility.
