Current Need: The Sr. Director of Strategic Operations & Planning is responsible for developing and driving strategy in a dynamic enterprise that requires identifying and advancing synergies across multiple teams and functional areas. The Strategic Operations & Planning leader will be accountable for doing exactly that for the Commercial Strategy & Innovation (CSI) team. Generally, this means ensuring that CSI commercial businesses are connected in meaningful ways to optimize cross-functional opportunities.
This work will involve helping teams develop a shared understanding of their own and other’s capabilities, identifying capability gaps and potential means of filling those gaps, developing strategic focus areas, facilitating dialogue about the work necessary to deliver on those strategies, organizing people around delivery of the identified work, and measuring progress toward delivering on the work.
All of this will require developing business unit context while understanding and interpreting the interests and concerns of key stakeholders (CSBD, Finance, IT, Human Resources, Segment Marketing, and others) across CSI and Customer Operations to inform a broad, McKesson-wide viewpoint.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and streamline the annual and long-range business planning process, incorporating stakeholder input and making adjustments as necessary. Ensure all CSI strategies developed through this process align with McKesson’s broader business objectives.
  • Oversee the annual operating budget and headcount in partnership with both the Sr. Vice President of CSI as well as the Sr. Vice President of Finance, and manage financial performance tracking (monthly, quarterly, annually).
  • Drive the identification, measurement, tracking, and reporting of meaningful metrics to provide insight into the progress being made toward strategic objectives, and to provide transparency to the McKesson executive team.
  • Work directly with CSI commercial businesses, B2B product teams, the CSI Center of Excellence (CoE), and other shared functions to facilitate optimal delivery on the identified strategies.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate potential risks that impact the team’s ability to achieve operational quality, technology uptime, customer experience, profitability, customer growth and retention.
  • Serve as a hub connecting the dots across our pharmacy software businesses, analytics, and pharmaceutical distribution businesses.
  • Accountable for managing executive updates at numerous executive readouts on CSI performance and key initiatives e.g., Quarterly Business Reviews, Budget Reviews, Monthly Ops Reporting, etc.
  • Partner with CSI leadership members to support the preparation for key planning and review meetings with a focus on making time, information, and decision processes more effective, ultimately, closing the gap between strategy and execution.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of management reporting and dashboards to monitor progress on CSI strategic priorities, key initiatives, KPIs, risks and issues.
  • Be a strategic communication resource for the CSI commercial businesses, including overseeing executive-level communication, and partnering with McKesson communication team members to develop and deliver the CSI communication strategy for annual CSI priorities.
  • Translate strategy into actionable execution plans, ensuring consistency with broader McKesson corporate strategies, and resolving emerging questions and issues.
  • Ensure effective project management and supports strategic project initiatives throughout the lifecycle of ideation, to business case development, execution, and operationalizing.
  • Lead team through effective adaptation, ambiguity, and rapid change events.
  • Ensure high quality employee attraction, engagement, and development at all levels, building bench strength through modeling of ICARE/ILEAD and development of a high-performing culture.
  • Promote a work environment that fosters creativity, productivity, collaboration, and accountability.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Typically requires 10 years of strategic operations, planning, program management, portfolio management, and/or product management experience. Less years required with relevant Master’s or Doctorate qualifications.
Critical Skills:
  • 10 years of strategy or consulting experience, or relevant industry experience (e.g., finance, product, strategic marketing, clinical operations).
  • Healthcare industry experience is required.
  • 8 years' experience managing and leading complex, inter-disciplinary teams.
  • Strategic Thinking: evaluating industry trends, developing long-term implications, and recommending pragmatic strategies for new business opportunities.
  • Analytical Rigor: ability to bring structure to ill-defined problems and intellectual leadership to problem solving; synthesize insights from analysis and ensure credible, actionable recommendations.
  • Financial Acumen: understanding and ability to develop financial modeling and experience with financial planning, budgeting, and capital allocation in the context of strategic planning to maximize shareholder value.
  • Communications Skills: ability to develop rapport and credibility across the organization, promote ideas and proposals persuasively. Ability to manage controversial situations including senior level leaders, external groups, and customers.
  • Healthcare Knowledge: knowledge of stakeholders, trends, economic drivers, and policy across healthcare.
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business or finance, or related field or equivalent experience. Advanced degree preferred.
