The Opportunity with McKinstry:

We are seeking an Operations Director to lead construction operations across our Distributed Energy and Renewables line of business. In this role, you will lead all aspects of construction operations across Solar Photovoltaic (Solar PV), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), microgrid applications, and other distributed energy resource solutions to support energy resiliency, electrification, and decarbonization offerings for clients distributed nationwide. Contract methods to lead include Design-Build (DB), Engineer Procure Construct (EPC), Energy Service Performance Contracting (ESPC), and Fixed-Price. You will facilitate and be responsible for customer satisfaction, employee success, financial predictability, safety, and other business outcomes across a portfolio of projects independently managed by individual Construction Management and Project Management teams. You will also closely collaborate with sales, project development, field, and other McKinstry business units to successfully obtain and deliver business that aligns with McKinstry's capabilities and plans. Additional responsibilities include:

Operations Management

  • Progressive and proven experience with leading and delivering projects from Engineer Procure Construct (EPC), Design-Build (DB), and Fixed-Price contractual delivery methods.
  • Assist Business Unit Manager and Leadership with the development and promotion of Operations Excellence and Process Improvement initiatives that impact Business Unit Performance.
  • Assist with the development of tools, templates, and operational processes to support the portfolio.
  • Participate with Business Unit Manager / Operations Managers in monthly department forecasting, annual planning, and department monthly meetings. Ownership of your own portfolio in regard.
  • Support Business Unit Manager / Operations Managers with proactive staffing efforts to meet operational responsibilities across portfolios.
  • Ensure that critical processes from the Project Life Cycle and other project management tools are being used and leveraged across all portfolios. (including coach, guide, mentor, and train around this content)
  • Work with Operations Managers and Project Managers to forecast and schedule manpower requirements based on scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Hold and support operations and construction teams accountable for deadlines and outcomes.
  • Work with McKinstry Safety and Quality Control SMEs to manage safety / quality standards, implementation, and training across all portfolios.
  • Work with Operations Managers to organize, plan, and leverage critical key milestones throughout the project lifecycle, to include risk reviews, development and pre-construction meetings, Risk, Issue, Opportunity (RIO) workshops, stakeholder analysis, and lessons learned.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Assist with expanding the Distributed Energy Resources and EcoDistrict Services business models within key, strategic, and other vertical markets across the National portfolio.
  • Assist Business Unit Manager with development and execution of strategic business plans, staffing plans, and tactical project delivery.
  • Assist with development of McKinstry's brand, particularly within the distributed energy, energy resiliency, electrification and decarbonization sectors within the commercial, industrial, higher education, and other relevant vertical markets.
  • Build and maintain relationships within industry leaders, associations and organizations.
  • Recruit, train, mentor and lead Operations Managers, Project Managers, and Project Superintendents in alignment with team goals and consistent with McKinstry values.
  • Directs managers and directors in assigned groups such as project design and delivery and specialized technical services to be efficient, effective and optimize efforts and financial returns.

Sales & Business Development Support

  • Available to sales, development, estimating for strategy and professional guidance on staffing, project costing, planning, and project delivery.
  • Participate in job walks, risk reviews, and bid reviews to provide strategy and expertise on constructability and ensure sound estimating, project planning, and implementation.
  • Attend client meetings, interviews, and events as needed to support.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You Need to Succeed at McKinstry

  • Must have demonstrated proficiency for all the responsibilities of an Operations Director, including both formal and functional leadership of teams.
  • 10 years of engineering, construction, real estate and/or facility services, project / program management experience required.
  • Four (4) year college degree in architecture, engineering, mechanical/electrical engineering, business management or related field; or equivalent professional experience required.
  • Strong business acumen and advanced knowledge of financial management programs and software is required.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Visio required; working knowledge of SharePoint preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of how sustainability standards and legislation interact to affect specific situations and clients required.
  • Proficiency in forecasting and managing cost types.

The pay range for this position is $157,900 - $240,100 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Base pay information is based on market location. A bonus may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
