The Intelligence & Investigative Division's Watch Center operates on-site 24 hours per day / 7 days per week. Positions are allocated for 10 - 20 hours per week.

This classification / position is not telework-eligible. Therefore, employees will report to the office work-site location listed in this job announcement.

Main Purpose of Job

A Police Communications Operator trainee is the entry level of communications work in a law enforcement operation. Employees in this classification provide services to law enforcement and other authorized agencies through the operation of computer terminals and multi-channel police radio equipment.

Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions.

POSITION DUTIES

Learns to operate emergency communications equipment, computer workstations, and software packagesLearns to receive and transmit information via multi-channel radio, telephone, and computer terminal equipmentLearns to monitor, collect, organize, and analyze reports of emergency incidents on a statewide and regional basis which may affect Maryland public safety and public safety personnelLearns to request or provide information regarding traffic records, statistics, driver's license and automobile registrationLearns to complete daily incident reports, noting any key issues or trends that should be brought to the attention of the shift supervisor or road personnelAttends all required classes, seminars, workshops and other educational opportunities designed to maintain or enhance emergency analyses and communication skillsPerforms other Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education :

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications are preferred, not required :

1) Experience managing multiple lines of high-volume calls and recording the information in writing.

2) Experience as an emergency or communications dispatcher (such as Maryland's, 911, 411, or 311).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Applicants for this classification may be subject to an extensive background investigation prior to appointment.

2. Employees in this classification will be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.

ASSESSMENT :

The assessment is designed to measure the candidates' knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this job classification.

Only candidates selected for an interview will be required to complete the assessment.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract, and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents.

As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled.

The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost of these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible for paying the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in 12 months. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
