Financial and business planning intern

Medical Benevolence Foundation (MBF) is a Christ-centered organization dedicated to transforming lives by building sustainable medical ministries in developing countries. Reporting to the CFO, the Financial and Business Planning Intern will provide financial, planning, analytical and administrative assistance to the CFO and CEO as directed. The scope of the finance area includes financial processing and accounting, management of a federal American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) grant, coordinating the process to ship medical supplies and pharmaceuticals to our international partners and business planning and budgeting. This position is based in MBF’s Houston area home office.

This position will work collaboratively and collegially with all MBF staff; follow the guidelines and policies of MBF; ensure personal and professional conduct reflects the ethical standards and religious values of MBF.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

BUSINESS PLANNING AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT

  • Assists in the management of process of procuring and shipping gifted medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and equipment to international hospital partners
  • Communicates with the international partner to determine needs and scope of project
  • Coordinates with donors in the procurement of supplies, pharmaceuticals, and equipment
  • Researches, develops, and documents fair market values of supplies, pharmaceuticals, and equipment
  • Defines scope of project, tasks, timeline, and resource requirements
  • Assists in the development and execution of long-term capital budgeting and financial strategy for the partners, including:
  • The development of forward-looking financial models based on historical performance and
  • Consulting-like business analytics and planning to various international hospital partners

FINANCIAL: ACCOUNTS PAYABLE, CASH APPLICATIONS AND PAYROLL

  • Assist with invoice preparation
  • Accurately code expenses by account numbers as listed in the chart of accounts
  • Export revenue from donor revenue management system to financial system
  • Reconcile bank accounts and checks received to ensure accuracy of deposits
  • Scan all checks received into Dropbox folders
  • Accurately enter check and donor data into donor revenue management system including allocations to donor designated funds
  • Assist with payroll processing- create payroll extracts and prepare financial entry spreadsheets

FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING, PLANNING AND CONTROLS

Assist CFO with:

  • Maintaining all files, journal entries, the accounting system and excel spreadsheets to meet the accounting and financial reporting needs
  • Creation of manual interfaces between donor management revenue system and financial system
  • Financial Statement preparation and yearly budget preparation
  • Managing the annual budget process including creating budget input spreadsheets, collecting budget data and creating summary budget reports
  • Tracking annual spending and creating variance analysis reports
  • Provide spending variance analysis by tracking spending against budgets and against project funding and agreements

ASHA GRANT MANAGEMENT:

  • Assist with monitoring ASHA project implementation against budget, timeline and construction specifications
  • Assist with accurately maintaining all financial records including record-keeping for preparation of ASHA grant documents and reports
  • Assist with the preparation and submission of all ASHA grant reports and closeout documents as required
  • Provide variance analysis spreadsheets tracking status of spending on a fund level against budget

QUALIFICATIONS:

S/BA degree is a requirement

Previous financial and business planning experience is preferred

Ability to manage confidential and sensitive matters and to focus under pressure

Experience with all Microsoft Office products is a requirement

Preferred experience using software applications including accounting, planning, revenue management and other data-based software applications

Project a professional demeanor as well as using tact when dealing with others

Strong organizational, analytical, multitasking, communication, and time management skills

Demonstrates drive and initiative, creativity, and diligence

Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment

Preferred familiarity with building construction and medical equipment
