The Veteran Affairs Health System in Central Arkansas is looking for a dedicated and compassionate Contract Med-Surg (Acute Care/Oncology) Registered Nurse (RN) to join our team in Little Rock. This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of our veterans and their families.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assess the health care needs of patients/residents and develop a plan of care to meet interdisciplinary goals.
  • Act on significant changes in the patient's/resident's health condition.
  • Carry out the plan of care by performing or assigning delegated tasks.
  • Collect and document pertinent data in the electronic patient/resident medical record.
  • Complete nursing assessments within required time frames, in accordance with policy and procedure.
  • Identify and act on predictable needs of the patient/resident.
  • Meet the health care needs of patients/residents by assessing and assisting them to meet expressed needs.
  • Address the emotional and spiritual needs of patients/residents and/or families.
  • Prioritize and complete tasks within the RN's assigned shift.
  • Update patient/resident care plans.
  • Notify the assigned physician of any changes in condition.
  • Report incidents of verbal or physical abuse immediately to the Nurse Manager or designated off-shift nursing leadership.
Specific Tasks
  • Perform head-to-toe assessments.
  • Insert IV lines and manage peripheral and central lines, including PICC lines.
  • Administer medications, including IV.
  • Coordinate and participate in patient admissions and discharges.
  • Measure vital signs and conduct hemodynamic monitoring, including pain assessment and pulse oximetry.
  • Perform wound care, including dressing changes and obtaining wound cultures.
  • Obtain and deliver specimens to the lab.
  • Perform tracheostomy care and non-acute/acute ventilator care.
  • Perform suctioning, including oral, nasogastric, and tracheostomy.
  • Perform deep suctioning and obtain specimens.
  • Administer tube feedings.
  • Assist with urinary and bowel elimination, including catheters, colostomies, and digital stimulation.
  • Provide patient/resident and family education regarding health, diagnoses, and medication administration.
  • Respond to and assist in emergency situations.
  • Provide clinical oversight to Licensed Practical Nurses, Nursing Assistants, and Health Technicians.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 1 year of experience required.
  • Ability to work 8 and 12-hour shifts.
  • Strong commitment to providing high-quality care to our nation's veterans.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
