SUMMARY: The nurse practitioner functions in an expanded nursing role and performs selected tasks and services previously within the province of medicine as well as those that fall within the province of nursing. When performing nursing aspects of this role, the nurse practitioner must have the opportunity to engage in independent as well as cooperative decision making. When performing expanded aspects of the role that overlap with medicine, the nurse practitioner must function in collaboration with qualified physicians within the framework of knowledge and skills, but also must be ready and willing to accept responsibility and accountability for their actions.
PRIMARY DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: (other duties may be assigned)
· Performs a complete physical examination.
· Order, perform, and interpret routine laboratory tests.
· Develop and implement plans for health promotion and health maintenance, including plans for disease prevention and provision of health education and counseling.
· Provide periodic health assessments.
· Provide clinical management of patients having uncomplicated problems.
· Provide assessments, education and management for family planning and fertility control.
· Provide prenatal care for women with uncomplicated pregnancies, giving attention to both maternal and fetal health.
· Co-manage care for patients with selected health complications.
· Arrange referrals to other members of the health care team as needed and to resources as appropriate.
· Obtains a complete health, psycho-social and medical history, and record findings in a systematic, accurate and succinct form.
· Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skills, and/or ability required:
· Ability to competently gather a health history of a patient including obtaining the data, recording and synthesizing all components, i.e., general health, sexual, psycho-social and nutritional histories.
· Ability to perform a health assessment including performing a physical examination.
· Ability to use good clinical judgement.
· Ability to provide clinical management of common, nonlife threatening conditions across the life span.
· Knowledge of laboratory assessment, indications, selected technical skills and interpretive analysis.
· Knowledge of anatomy and physiology and other didactic material pertinent to nurse Practitioner’s practice.
· Knowledge of family dynamics, human sexuality and parenting
· Knowledge of nutrition and physical fitness.
· Knowledge of special problems patients may be experiencing such as addictive diseases, victims of violence, and patients undergoing developmental or situation crises.
· Knowledge of community resources and health care delivery systems.
· Knowledge of standards and regulation of practice.
· Knowledge of research process and interpretation of findings.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Must be a registered nurse who graduated from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and is licensed to practice in the state of North Carolina.
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL/MOTOR SKILLS: Medical terminology, accurate keyboarding skills, ability to process work error free -- Ability to use standard office equipment, including computers, EHR systems. The ability to use medical equipment.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Teamwork and communication skills essential. Treat all patients, co-workers, and managers with courtesy and respect
MENTAL ABILITIES: Cognitive reasoning, Clear thinking in high-pressure situations. Ability to prioritize and withstand pressure of continual work with variable requirements. Ability to concentrate and maintain accuracy despite frequent interruptions. Critical thinking and organization skills, problem solving, and reasoning capabilities
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to speak English fluently. Spanish speaking or another language is a plus
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, REGISTRATIONS:
1. Current and Unrestricted North Carolina Nursing License
2. Current DEA registration.

MedNorth Health Center provides comprehensive health care services, inside a multi-cultural medical/dental clinic, to all individuals; insured, uninsured, and underinsured. The building is heated in winter and air conditioned in the summer with noise levels of moderate to loud. We serve patients who speak multiple languages and who may need the assistance of an interpreter. In this position one may be subject to exposure to copier toner, correction fluid, bright fluorescent lighting, and continuous personal computer exposure.
This job is a Blood borne Pathogen’s risk category I position.
