MedStar Health is Hiring a Lead Pharmacy Technician- Inpatient-Oncology Near Washington, DC

General Summary of Position Directly supervises the pharmacy technicians in the Department of Pharmacy at Georgetown University Hospital.Accountable for the oversight of day to day activities of the technician staff, scheduling technicians and providing staff training and development in the pharmacy.The position functions under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for all the activities outlined in the Pharmacy Technician job description.
  • Oversee technician operations of the Pharmacy in a cost-effective manner.Oversight activities include scheduling, day to day operations, delegating responsibility and assuring adequate resources to meet the patients' need.
  • Coordinates and participates in the orientation, training, and continuing education programs for technicians, new pharmacy employees and volunteers.
  • Actively contributes to the evaluation and continued improvement of patient services, policies, procedures and achievement of departmental goals and objectives.
  • Ensures that automated dispensing cabinet medications are loaded in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure that all required drugs are ordered for our patients scheduled to receive treatment prior to their arrival under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
  • Assures compliance with safety and security policy and procedures.
  • Performs quality assurance and improvement activities such as code carts, hypersensitivity boxes, refrigerator and freezer monitoring, and outdated medications checking.
  • Responsible for all technician-related functions during initiation and monitoring visits.
  • Demonstrates on consistent basis behaviors which comprise and maintain open and appropriate communications and an atmosphere of caring, concern, respect and support for patients, visitors, medical staff and coworkers.
  • Ensures that the technicians adhere to all NIOSH, USP-797, ASHP, and regulatory guidelines applicable to storage, preparation, dispensing of hazardous and non-hazardous drugs
  • Administer annual competency testing for technical staff that work in the satellite
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and is not to be considered as all inclusive.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education
    • High School Diploma or GEDrequiredor
    • the equivalent GED. requiredand
    • Some college education preferred
    Experience
    • 5-7 years Hospital oncology pharmacy practice experience (with IV admixture) preferredand
    • Be proficient in all job functions of the pharmacy technician (704340) required
    Licenses and Certifications
    • PHRMTECH-R - Registered Pharmacy Technician Registry with the D.C. Board of Pharmacyrequired
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
    • Must possess the ability to work well with others, make decisions, problem solve, communicate and delegate responsibility.
    • Demonstrates excellence in internal and external customer service ability in the areas of communication and service (i.e. answering the telephone after 3 rings and responding to issues in a timely manner).
    • Demonstrates supervisory and coaching skills.
    • Needs basic mathematical skills and a working knowledge of the metric system.
    • Must be proficient at reading.
