Collects blood specimens (e.g. venous, capillary, etc.) and urine specimens including proper drug screen collections (venipunctures on neonates are N/A; in the outpatient area and on the inpatient units, may be required to rotate to the off-site laboratory. Performs patient functions in the Hospital Information System (HIS) (e.g., registers, orders, updates, prints labels, etc.). Performs various lab duties such as centrifuging sample, places tubes on analyzers (CBC) and other lab duties/testing as deemed competent to perform. Answers telephone, takes and relays messages; communicates test results. Prints daily and final cumulative reports; sorts reports and properly distributes. Maintains adequate inventory of necessary supplies; orders supplies; stocks storeroom. Assists with training of various college and vocational school students. Works flexible hours to adequately staff department. Exhibits behaviors reflective of Memorial’s core values: Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence, and Service. Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance. Attends all mandatory education and in-services (i.e., team training, safety, infection control, etc.); completes mandatory health requirements. Employee performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital’s and department’s Ethics and Compliance program and is responsible to detect, observe and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, or upward through the chain of command, the Compliance Officer, or the hospital hotline.
Requirements
Completion of post secondary program in Phlebotomy/Medical Assistant and experience as a laboratory phlebotomist preferred, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. National Phlebotomy Society certification, National Society Clinical Pathology preferred or other assisting certification(s).
