Mental Health Office is Hiring a Research Scientist 1, Central Office; Near Albany, NY

This is a full-time non-competitive position. The minimum qualifications for appointment to a Research Scientist 1 position are a bachelor’s degree and two years of professional research experience in an appropriate field OR a master’s degree and one year of professional research experience in an appropriate field. Appropriate fields include Biostatistics, Economics, Epidemiology, Public Health, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, or a related social science field.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience with NYS OMH Medicaid data or other large state or federal databases; expertise in using SAS and/or SQL; expertise in sophisticated data modeling techniques; and experience with mental health populations and providers.
Duties Description
The Office of Mental Health (OMH) is seeking two (2) qualified candidates to fill Research Scientist 1, Grade 18, positions in the Office of the Chief Medical Officer, Office of Population Health & Evaluation (OPHE). OMH oversees a variety of initiatives and programs that serve adults with Serious Mental Illness and children and youth with Serious Emotional Disturbance. OPHE provides data collection, evaluation, data management, analyses, visualization and reporting to support these OMH functions. OPHE also maintains the PSYCKES application providing interactive data to behavioral health providers. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for conducting quantitative analyses and data visualization and reporting to support program and population monitoring.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Work with large administrative data, perform data extraction, data cleaning and merging with other data sources to create analytical files using statistical software such as SAS and SQL.
  • Conduct quantitative data analyses using SAS.
  • Develop, manage and refine analytic reports to support a variety of projects and/or the PSYCKES application.
  • Use visualization software such as Tableau to monitor trends, create reports and create maps.
  • Develop, maintain and run monthly processes to update reports, conduct data quality checks, and conduct visualization quality checks.
  • Develop and maintain data and project documentation.
