Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice with opportunities to function independently as practitioners. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

Essential Job Functions

*Performs duties of a staff pharmacist as required

*Establishes and maintains clinical knowledge or practice that supports the needs of the ministry

*Instructs and precepts pharmacy students as assigned

*Develops and performs basic patient assessments as appropriate for scope of practice (i.e. assess for bruising or bleeding in patients on warfarin therapy)

*Acts as liaison between nursing services, pharmacy services, and medical staff in developing, implementing, and maintaining clinical pharmacy programs

*Successfully completes required rotational and longitudinal rotations – under guidance of residency preceptors, chooses elective rotations to complete

*Helps recruit at ASHP Midyear Conference for upcoming class of new residents and other recruiting opportunities as requested by residency program preceptors

*Participates on hospital committees relating to areas of clinical practice expertise. Provide specialized education programs as the pharmacy expert in his/her areas of focus as needed for health care providers outside the department particularly nurses and physicians. Completes residency project as approved by residency program preceptors – project results presented at the discretion of residency program preceptors.

*May perform other duties within the scope of practice as assigned by supervisor.

*Obeys and adheres to all the Hospital and Facilities policies, procedures, rules, and regulations; the Department of Pharmacy Policies and Procedure manual for residents; and the Ethical and Religious Directives for Mercy health Care Services. A copy of the Hospital’s policy and procedure is also available in the Department of Pharmacy for the Resident’s review.
