Summary Of Primary Function/General Purpose Of PositionThe Pathology Assistant performs gross examination and description on all accessioned specimens. Through working knowledge, representative samples of tissue are submitted for microscopic evaluation. When appropriate, the pathologist is consulted during the examination. The Pathology Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Pathologists and the Histology Supervisor.
Essential Job Functions
Licensing/CertificationPA Pathologists' Assistant Certification by a nationally recognized certification agency (preferably ASCP) (preferred)
EducationBachelors, Biology/Chemistry/Medical Laboratory Science (required)
Masters, Pathology (preferred)
Completion of Pathologists' Assistant program (preferred)
Work Experience5 years experience as a pathology assistant (preferred)
TrainingContinuing Education for PA certification (required)
Science courses prerequisite to Pathology Assistant program (required)
Working ConditionsPeriods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur
May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids*
May be exposed to human blood and other potentially infectious materials*
May have periods of constant interruptions

Essential Job Functions
- Performs gross examination on all specimens submitted to the Pathology laboratory.
- Retrieves/accessions specimens.
- Enters workload/prints cassettes.
- Loads tissue processors with specimens.
- Stocks/clean working bench/area.
- Informs Histology Supervisor of supply needs.
- Disposes of wet tissue specimens following departmental/hospital policy.
- Assists pathologist in retrieving organs for teaching purposes.
- Utilizes advanced knowledge of tissue processors.
