Job Duties

  • Properly identifies patients and samples during all phases of testing
  • Follows laboratory procedures for specimen collection, order entry, specimen receiving, and all other duties
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with physicians, nurses, other medical personnel, patients, and families
  • Prioritizes workload to ensure timely collection of patient samples
  • Maintains and improves skills by participating in at least one continuing education activity annually
  • Actively seeks and identifies opportunities for process improvement
  • Assists in procedure writing, updating, and validating
  • Acts as a resource for laboratory medicine information to providers and others
  • Uses laboratory information system access information and enter information
  • Educates and trains new staff and students
  • Perform specimen collection, including phlebotomy, respiratory swabs, and skin tests, with skill and compassion
  • Answers incoming phone calls and places outgoing phone calls in a timely manner using proper phone etiquette
  • Receives specimens into the laboratory and delivers to proper locations
  • Exhibits outstanding customer service to patients, families, and colleagues
  • Participates in off-site collections and rotate to other locations as required
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of specimen collection procedures, including venipuncture, capillary collection, TB placement, and respiratory swabs
  • Knowledge of different patient populations and their needs
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under pressure without sacrificing quality
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work with interruptions
  • Skill to use the laboratory information system (LIS)
  • Ability to detail-oriented
  • Ability to complete appropriate documentation and paperwork clearly and completely
Professional Experience
  • Experience preferred, but not required.
Education
  • Required: High school diploma or GED
  • Preferred: Graduate of a phlebotomy training program or medical assisting program
Licensure, Certification, Registration
  • Preferred: Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) or Registered Phlebotomy Technician (American Medical Technologists)
Visual Acuity
  • Work requires close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to read pertinent printed material and distinguish colors.
  • Ability to include inspection during patient assessment.
  • Ability to accurately read measurements on patient related equipment—some examples include: thermometers, mechanical gauges, glucometers, IV pumps, and computer monitor displays.
  • Ability to read management reports or other pertinent printed material.
  • Worker must be able to visually assess patients' safety needs.
  • Normal visual acuity required to maintain accuracy and neatness of work.
  • Preparing and reading written documentation, use of computer.

  • Adaptability to fluctuate between priorities on a daily basis, i.e. answering the phone, pulling charts, filing charts, copying charts and helping answer questions for ancillary staff.
