Title: Veterinary Technician
Job Description:
As a veterinary technician at the Meriden Humane Society, you will play a crucial role in
overseeing the medical care for all animals in our on-site and foster care programs. You
will work with our senior Vet Tech, interact with multiple veterinarians, and provide
guidance to animal care staff, volunteers, and foster providers to ensure the health and
well-being of animals in the MHS family.
Primary responsibilities include:
Oversight of Medical Care:
Provide training to staff and volunteers in medication and vaccination
administration, inserting microchips, blood drawing, medication administration
and animal health assessment.
Review any veterinary documentation for incoming animals. Assess vaccination
status and due dates, health concerns and any unmet medical needs. Create
plan with staff to meet any new animal’s needs.
Assist staff to triage animal medical needs and initiate appropriate plans and
when on site conduct hands on medical care (i.e. medication administration, first
aid, emergency care) as needed
Coordinate with Veterinarians for routine examinations, vaccinations, and
planned and emergency medical procedures.
Review prescribed treatment plans and oversee their implementation
in close communication with veterinarians to report progress, changes,
and concerns about animals and treatment plans
Coordinate spay/neuter appointments with clinics, complete pre-surgery
paperwork, and communicate follow up care needs.
Understand MHS and veterinary policies regarding use of ‘standing
medical orders’, and what medications/interventions require a veterinary
appointment.
Oversee adherence to treatment, medication and vaccination due dates including
flea and heartworm preventatives, prescribed diets, bloodwork, and weight
checks, and ensure that all information is properly entered into the MHS
database.
Organize inventory of medications and medical supplies including monitoring
inventory so adequate supplies are on hand, checking expiration dates, and
verifying meds that come in from donations can be used.
Place orders for medications, medical supplies and prescription foods as
needed.
Ensure proper disposal of sharps, expired medications, and unusable
medications.
Record Keeping and Documentation:
Ensure staff are trained on how to appropriately maintain animal records and that
those records are accurate and up to date in the MHS database.
Communication:
Be available to educate and answer questions from foster providers and adopters
regarding the health and medical history of animals and responsible pet
ownership. This may include providing after hours and “on call” support.
Work collaboratively with other shelter staff, including animal care technicians,
adoption counselors, and administrative personnel.
Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and continuing education
opportunities.
Foster a positive and supportive work environment within the shelter team.
Qualifications:
Associate degree in veterinary technology or related field preferred or
appropriate experience required.
Certification as a Veterinary Technician (CVT, RVT, or LVT) preferred.
Knowledge of animal behavior, nutrition, and basic medical care.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and sometimes emotionally challenging
environment, including an ability to cope with a variety of stressful situations.
Willingness to adhere to shelter policies and procedures, including safety.
protocols and ethical guidelines.
Previous experience working in an animal shelter or veterinary clinic a plus.
Working Conditions:
Work may involve exposure to animal waste, odors, potential infectious
material, potentially hazardous materials, and potential allergens.
May require occasional weekend, evening, or holiday hours, depending on
the needs of the shelter.
Physical demands include standing for extended periods, bending, lifting
up to 50lbs, and restraining animals.
