Description

GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

Under the direction of the Member Advancement Director, this person will be responsible for providing top quality customer service in accordance with the mission and goals of the YMCA, and one on one exercise evaluation and prescription. In addition, the “Y” values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility will be exemplified at all times

 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS (SPECIALIZED, TECHNICAL, OR PRACTICAL)-

• Nationally recognized certification. (ACE, AFFA, ACSM, NSCA, NASM, YMCA, others as approved)

• Knowledge of resistance machines, proper technique and purpose of exercises.

• Fundamental knowledge of anatomy, physiology and exercise programming.

• Fundamental knowledge of exercise prescription bases on members goals.

• Must be 18 years old.

• High School graduate or equivalent.

CERTIFICATIONS-

• Maintain current certifications

• Must obtain certification in the following within the first 60 days:

• CPR/AED

• Must obtain certification in the following 90 days:

• Healthy Lifestyle Principles

• Foundations of Strength and Conditioning

• Listen First

• Child Abuse Prevention

• HUMAN RELATIONS SKILLS-

• Demonstrate the ability to interpret and administer all policies, established by the YMCA, to all employees and volunteers you may come in contact with.

• Great interpersonal skills.

• Positive and professional attitude, ability to work independently and as a team member, self motivated.

Decision Making and Judgment-

• Must not recruit YMCA clients to an in home personal training business or other place of employment.

• Enjoy exercising and have desire to motivate others to live a healthy lifestyle.

• Must interact appropriately with members, parents, children and staff.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS-

• Must be able to demonstrate use of resistance and cardiovascular equipment, as well as the ability to spot members in the free weight room and perform fitness evaluations based on industry standards.

• Must be motivated and able to implement oral and written instructions

• Must be able to lift at least 30 pounds.

• Must have patience to deal with high volume of people.

• Knowledge and physical ability to respond in emergency situations.

• Creativity; ability to develop and design individual fitness programs that are safe, fun and a challenge to each client.

• Must have the ability to effectively keep written records (i.e. Member workout cards, incident reports).

PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES:

• Greet each member with a smile

• Provide prompt contact of clients. Respond within 24 hours and notify your supervisor if you are unable to contact the client.

• Set-up and maintain proper client files (i.e. member folder, signed and dated tracking sheet).

• Clients must pay prior to receiving service. Trainers must receive proof of payment prior to session(s).

• Perform a fitness evaluation that gives your client a baseline to see improvements.

• Make sure you are not recommending specific diets, supplements, or rehabilitation programs unless you are licensed in that area.

• Assure that training routines include proper warm-up, training and cool down segments which include flexibility and cardiovascular components with strengths training.

• Make follow-up calls or send encouraging e-mails.

• Make yourself accessible to current or potential clients.

• Keep up to date with materials related to health and fitness through workshops, publications, seminars, classes, etc.

• Be a role model by following all YMCA policies and procedures (i.e. wipe down equipment, rack weights, use clips, let members work in sets, etc.).

• In case of Illness cancel and re-schedule your appointment at least 3 hours prior to scheduled appointment.

• Be an efficient trainer. Training sessions last for one hour.

• Keep relationships with clients on a professional level.

• Interact with members in a friendly manner.

• Enforce fitness rules and policies.

• Professionally and courteously instruct clients in safe and proper use of exercise equipment and maintain motivated, positive and helpful attitude with all clients and members.

• Report problems, complaints or concerns of participants to supervisor in a timely fashion.

• Be familiar with all YMCA programs and know where to find information.

• Attend required training’s, workshops and staff meeting.

• Follow branch and association dress code.

• Serve as an effective communicator to promote cooperation with fitness staff, directors, maintenance, and front desk to ensure a well run program.

• Complete incident reports and submit to Member Advancement Director promptly.

• Have a positive attitude toward working independently and as a member of a team.

• Have an enthusiastic approach to administering fitness programming.

• Ongoing “self education on fitness trends and standards.

• Punctual, professional and dependable.

• Report all maintenance issues related to fitness equipment within 24 hours to Supervisor.

• Promote member incentive programs and other YMCA programs that members would benefit from

Qualifications


  • Experience: 6 months to 1 year.
  • Certifications: Required for hiring First Aid, CPR/AED, BBP, Group Fitness Instructor Certification from one or more of the following; AFAA, ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA, YMCA or other nationally recognized, tested, and renewal required certification. To be obtained within 90 Days of Hire.
  • Other Skills/Training: First 90 days of employment complete the following Human Resources

Trainings: Sexual Harassment, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and New Employee Orientation; and within 6 months the H/W Department training - YMCA Healthy Lifestyle and Principles preferred. Prefer knowledge of and previous experience with, diverse populations (youth, seniors, physical disability, race, culture). Must gain knowledge of Health Seekers and Activate America initiative, Listen First skills, and the Y Mission.
