Join the MVT family!!! Mesilla Valley Transportation is hiring a Tax Accountant in Las Cruces, NM. This role will be based at the MVT Corporate office and will be expected to report to work at the Corporate facility each work day.

A Tax Accountant assists in overseeing accounting operations, tax preparation, and day-to-day business transactions. Responsible for reviewing accounting department journal entries and general ledger account reconciliation as well as assisting with financial statements, examining, and analyzing a company's accounts, and ensuring compliance with financial reporting and other standard accounting procedures. Key measures of success include:

• Synthesizing complex or diverse information.
• Collecting and researching data.
• Using intuition and experience to complement data
• Demonstrating attention to detail, as well as identifying and solving problems in a timely manner
• When necessary, gathering and analyzing information to develop alternative solutions

Pay: $60,000 per year (Depending on Experience)

Responsibilities:

• Ensures that all office personnel are using proper accounting procedures and maintaining accurate records.
• Prepares, examines, and analyzes accounting records, complex tax returns, financial statements, and other financial reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards.
• Implementing strategies to minimize corporate tax liability in accordance with current tax laws.
• Reviews Journal entries of accountants and accounting clerks to ensure they have been correctly submitted.
• Provides guidance, advice, feedback, support, and training to all new accounting department employees.
• Manages and maintains general ledger by preparing journal entries, reconciling financial statements and accounts while ensuring data accuracy.
• Assists in analyzing financial information to identify discrepancies.
• Monitors compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and Mesilla Valley Transportation procedures.
• Audits contracts, orders, and vouchers, and prepares reports to substantiate individual transactions prior to settlement.
• Serves as a liaison to external auditors and provides them with any information needed to meet the audit standards.
• Assists with annual audit, yearend review, and physical inventory.
• Maintains tax forms/information as required by law.
• Reviews, investigates, and corrects errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents, and reports.
• Verifies and posts details of business transactions, such as funds received and disbursed, and totals accounts.
• Assists the Accounting team as needed and provide guidance where necessary (Payroll, PTO, audits, etc.).

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field from four-year College or university.
• Minimum of 5 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• In-depth understanding of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and regulations.
• In-depth understanding of Tax Accounting laws and regulations.
• Thorough knowledge of basic accounting procedures.
• Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process.
• Familiarity with financial accounting statements.
• Strong communication, interpersonal skills, organizational and time-management skills.
• Knowledge and experience utilizing accounting and tax software.
• Experience working with AS400 and McLeod (Preferred).
• Advanced MS Excel, including VLOOKUP and IF Functions.
