Job DescriptionStormwater specialists are essential for sustainable, resilient, and environmentally responsible infrastructure development. Metric Environmental seeks a Stormwater Staff Scientist to join our diverse team. As a Staff Scientist in our Water Resources Engineering Division, you will use your knowledge of stormwater management systems to inspect, report, and provide guidance and recommendations to clients to facilitate project compliance with environmental regulations. Your days in the field will be spent conducting inspections to assess compliance across various project types, aligning with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program at federal, state, and local levels. When in the office, you will have opportunities to collaborate on developing stormwater permits, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWP3), and Stormwater Quality Control Plans (SWQCP).

Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesThe primary responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to:
  • Conduct routine site assessments, inspections, monitoring, and sampling of construction, municipal, and industrial sites.
  • Prepare technical reports in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Identify, assess, and document potential stormwater issues during field activities.
  • Support the development and implementation of Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWP3s), Stormwater Quality Control Plans (SWQCPs), Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plans (SPCCs) in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations, in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky
  • Assist in preparing necessary permits from regulatory agencies (e.g., EPA, state environmental departments) for stormwater-related activities.
  • Conduct stormwater construction inspections for various clients including Department of Transportation (DOT) projects in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio as well as private development projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications and verify proper implementation of stormwater best management practices (BMPs).
Required Knowledge, Skills, And AbilitiesAt a minimum, the ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Be able to interpret, understand, and communicate federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Ability to assist in the preparation of SWPPP, SPCC, and SWQCP documents.
  • Ability to read and interpret building and construction plans and specifications.
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures and methods including telephone communications, office systems, and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of a variety of computer software programs including Microsoft word processing, Excel, and database management.
  • Experience using GIS and/or AutoCAD software preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Communicate directly with company personnel and clients.
  • Strong technical writing skills, especially the ability to present technical concepts to multiple audiences.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and as part of a team to solve complex problems.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills
Required Education And Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, environmental policy, chemistry, biology, geology, or a related field.
  • 1 to 3 years of stormwater or environmental-related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the company travel policy.
  • CESSWI, CISEC, or CPESC certification or ability to obtain within 12 months.
  • 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training
  • OSHA 10-hour Construction Training
