Position Description

The Sustainability Project Manager supports the Division of Sustainability’s goal to increase energy and water efficiency and decrease waste and greenhouse gas emissions across Metro-wide Government operations. As part of a small, collaborative team, this position designs and implements strategies that measurably advance this goal.

This position oversees departmental implementation of and overall reporting on Metro’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (Metro Code 2.32.080), which mandates annual stair-step goals towards achieving 100% renewable energy for municipal operations by 2041.

This position will coordinate with General Services divisions, other Metro departments, the local power utility (Nashville Electric Service), Tennessee Valley Authority, and contracted vendors towards achieving the goals of this mandate and advancing other city energy goals and projects. Responsibilities include data collection and analysis, reporting, research, as well as renewable energy site selection, design guidelines, monitoring, and generation tracking.

The candidate must be a motivated and dynamic professional with excellent decision-making and interpersonal abilities and the ability to skillfully manage concurrent projects. Flexibility, positivity, reliability, and a commitment to excellence are required.

**This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule that may include remote work.**

Typical Duties

  • Oversees departmental implementation of and overall reporting on Metro’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (Metro Code 2.32.080).
  • Manages vendor contracts related to renewable energy; ensures quality control and budgetary compliance.
  • Establishes strong lines of communication with other Metro departments to share best practices and support progress toward meeting the RPS.
  • Utilizes the findings of a 2023 third-party solar assessment to develop strategy for adding solar PV (owned and leased) on existing General Services facilities. Works closely with General Services’ Operations and Maintenance team to ensure feasibility and ongoing maintenance.
  • Advises General Services’ Design and Construction team on renewable energy strategies for new buildings and major renovations. Refines existing solar PV design standards.
  • Manages Metro’s Green Invest 40MW solar project and seeks additional opportunities for large-scale offsite renewables.
  • Collaborates closely with General Services’ energy team to coordinate energy efficiency and renewable energy goals, projects, and strategies. Supports Metro’s LEED Zero requirements (Metro Code 2.32.070) in the context of General Services’ building portfolio.
  • Monitors renewable energy assets for faults and oversees vendor repairs and maintenance.
  • Maintains databases and other records in support of day-to-day operations related to renewable energy production. Provides on-demand snapshots of RPS progress in easy-to-understand formats.
  • Works with General Services’ grants manager to apply for grant funds and rebates for renewable energy and decarbonization.
  • Researches and stays abreast of industry best practices, policies, and technologies that may impact progress towards Metro’s RPS and energy efficiency goals.
  • Assists in conducting periodic greenhouse gas emissions inventories at both municipal and community-wide scales.
  • Performs a variety of professional, technical and administrative duties to support energy management.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in any technical field, including but not limited to: Engineering, Environmental Science, Data Science, or related field and five (5) years of professional experience in a sustainability-related field. NO SUBSTITUTIONS

** Passing a Metro Nashville Police Department background check is required**

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • One or more of the following:
  1. LEED accreditation (any level)
  2. Renewable Energy Professional (REP) certification 
  3. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  4. Carbon Auditing Professional (CAP) certification
  5. Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP) certification
  6. Certified Decarbonization Professional (CDP) certification
  7. Lean Six Sigma certification
  • Demonstrated experience in data collection, analysis, and reporting with a high regard for quality control
  • Demonstrably reliable and detail-oriented with impeccable follow through on tasks
  • Demonstrated experience in energy project management including, planning, executing, monitoring, and closing projects
  • Experience collaborating with and engaging internal and external stakeholders within the context of a bureaucracy
  • Experience in the renewable energy sector
