Metro Parks Tacoma is Hiring a Senior Accountant Near Tacoma, WA

Based on our internal equity review process, the starting yearly salary for this position is set at $88.626
To allow for growth and salary progression the full annual salary range is $88,626 - $121,329. Employees will have the opportunity to move through the posted range based on annual performance reviews and merit increases.
A Senior Accountant is responsible for one or more sections of accounting and is expected to display considerable initiative in meeting deadlines, as well as identifying ways to improve and/or streamline processes within their areas of responsibility. They independently perform advanced journey-level accounting analysis and administrative work in the district’s Business Administration and Planning department, and can be involved in all areas of the compilation of the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR). The Senior Accountant assumes responsibility for a wider scope of operation and is involved in many phases of complex accounting and financial recordkeeping, which may involve District-wide and multi-departmental impact. In addition, Senior Accountant may also serve as a subject matter expert in a particular area and is held accountable for complete proficiency.

On top of that, you’ll wake each day knowing that you’re helping make Tacoma a great place to call home.Position Information Under the general direction of the Controller, the Senior Accountant performs the full range of accounting functions associated with operations of the Business Administration and Planning department. These responsibilities encompass fixed asset management, lease accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls. The role requires expertise in governmental accounting principles and practices, along with specific knowledge pertinent to the assigned functions. In addition, the Senior Accountant supports the Controller with internal and external audits, crafting and enforcing policies and procedures for the financial handling of IT subscriptions, leases, and assets, along with managing inventory control and works directly with department managers to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of district’s financial statements.
 
This position is expected to independently perform professional accounting work requiring the application of advanced accounting knowledge in accordance with established accounting principles, theories, concepts, and practices.
In the performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees are expected to:

  • Observe applicable safety requirements, use safety equipment provided, implement appropriate safety practices at all times and report immediately any unsafe working conditions or hazards.
  • Oversee the complete lifecycle of fixed assets, including the recording of acquisitions, disposals, transfers, and depreciation adjustments in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and organizational policies. 
  • Perform complex accounting functions including periodic maintenance of the general ledger, analyze records of financial transactions to determine accuracy and completeness of entries, identify and resolve discrepancies, if any, and assists with corrections and/or adjustment needed. Establish and maintain effective internal controls over fixed assets and lease accounting processes to ensure the integrity of financial information, compliance with policies and regulations, and safeguarding of assets.
  • Ensure compliance with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) Statement No. 87 on leases by accurately identifying, classifying, and recording lease transactions, including operating leases and capital leases. Analyze lease agreements to determine the appropriate accounting treatment, including lease classification, recognition of lease assets and liabilities, and calculation of lease payments.
  • Partner with Planning department staff to ensure continuous evaluation of capital project expenditure and timely accounting of all expenses; continuously evaluate processes for GAAP compliance; conduct annual fixed asset existence testing; collaborate on developing and communicating instructions and timely reporting for the annual physical audit. 
  • Coordinate and facilitate internal and external audits related to fixed assets and lease accounting, providing necessary documentation, explanations, and support to auditors.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, automation, and efficiency enhancements in fixed asset and lease accounting processes, implementing best practices to streamline workflows and reduce manual efforts.
  • Provide training and support to finance department staff and other stakeholders on fixed asset accounting principles, GASB 87 requirements, and related topics to ensure understanding and compliance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, to ensure proper accounting treatment and reporting of fixed assets and lease transactions in accordance with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Reconcile monthly Balance Sheet accounts as assigned. Assure source documents support GL balances, identify discrepancies, and recommend corrective action, understand, and update processes as necessary to balance accounts.
  • Provide support to the Controller for annual audit by preparing required year-end audit schedules and work papers. Track documents provided with the external auditors to ensure completion of the audit schedule in timely fashion.
  • Assist with technical accounting and reporting projects, analyses, and other projects and support and back up other members of the finance department as needed.
Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or closely related field and five years increasingly responsible experience in governmental accounting or finance. Four additional years of related experience may substitute for the degree.
LICENSE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
C.P.A. License preferred.
Valid Washington driver's license with acceptable driving record required.ENVIRONMENT:
  • The work environment is an office setting.
  • Travel by car may be required – must have valid driver’s license and vehicle.
  • Movements frequently and regularly required using the wrists, hands and/or fingers
  • Frequently required to sit and stand for longer periods of time
