RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Locomotive Engineer Training Program prepares candidates for the position of Locomotive Engineer, the person responsible for the safe movement of trains and passengers under all operating conditions. A Locomotive Engineer must be knowledgeable in all operating rules, special instructions, physical characteristics of the entire railroad, air brake and equipment of all types of locomotives to include both diesel and multiple unit (electric), and competent at road troubleshooting of all equipment. An Engineer must be able to safely operate diesel and multiple unit trains.

The Locomotive Engineer Training Program, with its emphasis on rules, physical characteristics, mechanical operations, and train handling, is one of the most demanding and rewarding programs offered by the Railway. Candidates must qualify in all aspects of the job title (Passenger Service, Switching Crew, Work Trains).

EDUCATIONANDEXPERIENCE

  • Must have a valid high school diploma or GED equivalent and three (3) years of full- time satisfactory work experience related to customer service. (1 year of college can be substituted for up to 1 year of work experience)
  • Valid driver’s license
  • A successful candidate must have the ability to understand and speak English over radiocommunications.
  • Have an ability to remember information, such as words, numbers, pictures, and

procedures.

  • Must be punctual and have good time management skills.
  • Must be able to maintainattentiveness and concentrate on a task for an extended period without being distracted.
  • Must beable to respond quickly and appropriately to situations that are presented (i.e., signals, alarms, emergency situations, etc.) as well as be safety conscious.
  • Must be able to respond to visual signals including distinguishing-colored lights.

In addition, candidates are required to pass respective examinations related to their craft, including butnot limited to: Roadway Worker Protection (RWP), Book of Rules, Conductor exams etc. Failure topass any examination may result in termination.

DESIREDSKILLS

• Knowledge of SIR operating and safety rules.

• Ability to anticipate and analyze problems and take appropriate corrective actions.

• Ability to work well in a team environment.

Experience in a customer service setting

Experience working in a safety sensitive position.

Transportation or Operations related experience
