Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital is Hiring a Registered Veterinary Technician-Emergency/Nursing Dept. Near Copley, OH

REGISTERED VETERINARY TECHNICIAN

Basic Function:

To primarily function as professional technical support to the Veterinarians at Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital. To assist with animal care, basic laboratory duties, diagnostic techniques and surgical procedures, client contact, and personal technical development.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technology program and holds a current license from the state of Ohio.
  • Perform basic mathematics up to algebra, and the ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • The applicant must be able to handle multiple tasks with ease, efficiency and accuracy.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted.

Technical Duties and Responsibilities:

Animal Care:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of “normal” parameters/signalments for healthy animals in order to alert Veterinarians of any changes in animal’s condition or potential emergency situations.
  • Understand and demonstrate competency in proper IV Catheter selection and placement, as well as demonstrating the ability to maintain and calculate IV fluids/fluid rates. Phlebotomy skills and the capability to pass urinary catheters are essential.
  • Demonstrate full understanding and competency in drug identification, proper medication delivery systems, and ability to discern possible drug reactions within a patient. Calculation, preparation and administration of accurate doses based on Veterinarian’s directions, and preparation of accurate prescription labels.
  • Learn bandage, dressing, splinting and casting techniques and applications.
  • Provide basic nursing care to all patients to include walking, feeding, bathing and comforting, ensuring that the Veterinarian’s orders are followed in all aspects.
  • Perform necessary laboratory tests to include fecal floatation, urinalysis, CBC/differentials, FELV/FIV tests, parvo tests, cultures/sensitivities, heartworm tests and WBC’s among others. Full knowledge of specimen preparation and routes of transportation by any outside laboratory analysis.
  • Communication is required between all personnel, supervisor, Veterinarian or other technical staff. Completion of “rounds” with oncoming personnel is imperative for consistent continuity of care for all patients.

Clinical Pathology:

  • Understand and accurately perform specimen collection, hematology and phlebotomy procedures, and microbiology techniques. Understand and demonstrate competency in proper usage of bloodwork instruments.
  • Understand any state and federal regulations regarding the safe handling of specimens and the proper routes of transportation.
  • Demonstrate competency in parasite evaluations, biochemical analysis, cytology examinations and urinalysis.

Radiology:

  • Demonstrate proper knowledge of radiology equipment, personal protective equipment and exhibit proper safety procedures at all times.
  • Possess competency in patient preparation, restraint and positioning for all types of films.

Anesthesiology:

  • Assist with pre-anesthetic evaluation and administer proper local, regional or general anesthetic under the direct order of the Veterinarian on duty. Demonstrate full competency regarding proper intubation techniques.
  • Monitor patients while under anesthetic and during recovery. Demonstrate ability to recognize the symptoms of respiratory/cardiac distress/arrest. Demonstrate ability to perform CPR under the direction of a Veterinarian. Demonstrate full understanding of anesthetic recovery agents and proper routes of administration.
  • Understand proper usage of anesthetic equipment, and demonstrates proper cleaning/maintenance of anesthetic equipment.

Schedule:

3rd shift : Sun-Tues 9p-9:30a

First Shift- flexible days, must be able to work 1 weekend day.

Wage:

$20.00-28.00/hr based on experience.
