DESCRIPTION: 31N Student Support Specialist – Elementary School

SUPERVISOR: Superintendent and/or Special Education Supervisor

JOB SUMMARY: The Student Support Specialist for K-4 Elementary students will actively support students, parents, and district personnel with engaging in strategies leading to increased mental, emotional, and social well-being. This position will also provide support services to students in accordance with 31N Funding and Caring 4 Students guidelines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate successful experiences in counseling, social work, psychology, mental health care, or equivalent
  • Administer a comprehensive behavioral health assessment including the use of screening tools
  • Development of a treatment/plan of care, with input from the student and parents/caregivers as appropriate
  • Behavior health interventions to enhance the psychological, behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and social factors important for the prevention, treatment, or management of behavioral health concerns
  • Assess the effectiveness of the delivered services toward achieving the student driven goals and objectives via treatment service plan review
  • Assess needs for additional counseling services, making referrals when appropriate to Community Mental Health System.
  • Assist in Crisis Intervention
  • Serve as case manager to coordinate services
  • Experience with the development, selection, and implementation of researched based behavior interventions for students
  • Knowledge of academic and behavior interventions to support high quality instruction for all students and to meet student’s individual needs
  • Knowledge of TRAILS to wellness preferred
  • Current knowledge of research-based strategies and interventions
  • Thorough understanding of School Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and how it relates to the classroom setting and school climate
  • Models skillful use of data to inform decision making
  • Provide ongoing assessment and data support including data-based problem solving.
  • Ability to accurately analyze data.
  • Demonstrated Technical Skills
  • Maintain appropriate logging and billing for 31N
  • Possess well-developed problem-solving skills and leadership potential
  • Possess sound, independent judgment, including handling of confidential matters
  • Possess working knowledge of best practice strategies; able to make research-based decisions
  • Pass background check
  • Effective and timely written and oral communication with parents, staff, and other school personnel
  • Develops and maintains a positive rapport with families and staff
  • Maintains professional competence through professional reading and attending appropriate workshops, courses, and conferences in keeping with the needs of students and in accordance with district guidelines
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance
  • Any other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Must possess any of the following degrees and/or accreditations;

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent, is required
  • Master’s Degree preferred
  • Majors/licensures/certifications that will be considered:
    • School Social Worker
    • Licensed Social Worker, preferably with a teaching certificate
    • Michigan Guidance and Counseling Certification (NT, SCL, or PEASC)
    • School Psychologist Certificate
    • Fully Licensed Psychologist by Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs
    • Board Certified Behavior Analyst
    • Other degrees in mental health care may be considered

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedure, or governmental regulations. Ability to professionally write reports, correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to present information and respond to questions from staff, students, families and other stakeholders.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to perform basic math computations including statistics, rates, ratio, and percent’s using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Demonstrated ability to use good judgment in decision-making.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research to instructional and behavioral programs. Demonstrated ability to proficiently operate a personal and mainframe computer and related software (Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Skyward, Internet, etc.) Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community. Ability to maintain a calm demeanor and remain professional in stressful situations. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties through knowledge of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Ability to prioritize work and organize work; with delegating as appropriate. Ability to multi-task. Demonstrated ability to deal with confidential information with a high degree of discretion and professionalism.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is almost continuously required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk and stand. The employee occasionally will lift and carry up to ten pounds, for example school supplies. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance and punctuality are expectations of the position.

The noise level in the work environment is normally moderate. However, the noise level can vary depending upon daily activity but will still remain within the acceptable noise level range.
