Position: Ryan Elementary Principal

SUMMARY: Provides instructional leadership to staff including: administering instructional programs, curriculum planning, supervision/evaluation, implementation, and professional development. The principal is responsible for day-to-day building and grounds administration and the safety and welfare of students, staff and activities. The principal will ensure a safe, pleasant and effective educational atmosphere, provide discipline as necessary and enforce school policy.

Individuals employed in Michigan after January 4, 2010, as superintendents, as principals, as assistant principals, and in positions whose primary responsibility is administering instructional programs. In general, those individuals must hold school administrator certification under MCL 380.1536.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s Degree in educational leadership/school administration or valid alternative
  • Current Valid Administrator’s Certificate or valid alternative
  • Five years of successful teaching experience required
  • Experience with curriculum implementation, school improvement team, peer coaching, PLC implementation or practice, understanding of restorative practice, and data analysis preferred.
  • Current and relevant knowledge and experience with MTSS preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Member of School Improvement site-based team.
  • Provides leadership in planning development, supervision and evaluation of curricular programs and materials.
  • Interacts with students in a constructive manner to encourage individuals to perform at their highest level.
  • Leads building staff to provide an atmosphere of learning, safety & welfare of students.
  • Assigns teachers to classrooms and students to classes.
  • Evaluates performance and effectiveness of programs and supervises all staff. Coordinates in-service training for staff.
  • Properly trained per MDE law and administers the evaluation of all building staff members.
  • Maintains relations and is actively involved with parents, parent groups, school volunteers and outside agencies.
  • Participates and conducts district-wide activities, in-services, and committees, as appropriate.
  • Implements policy and procedure changes from the Board, or the State and Federal level at the building level. Reports appropriately to staff and to the community on Public Act 25.
  • Able to work with staff, committees, etc. to promote site-based and building-based decisions and school improvement.
  • Prepares the school budget, works with the superintendent and business manager on budgeting/purchasing.
  • Establishes priorities for educational materials to meet the needs of students and teachers with allowable anticipated funds.
  • Works with Central Office personnel to coordinate processes for the effective functioning of the school. (Grant writing, budgets, mandated paperwork, capital outlay & improvement projects, inventory)
  • Maintains current information on legal/financial developments of educational legislative reforms.
  • Maintains current educational training and professional development.
  • Coordinates building activities and site availability with the District Building Use Coordinator. Conducts periodic inspection of building, grounds, equipment. Requests maintenance, repairs, upkeep from Director of Buildings & Grounds.
  • Holds fire/tornado/earthquake drills in compliance with State laws.
  • Performs all jobs as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.
