Position Details

POSITION:
Principal of Special Education
QUALIFICATIONS:
– Masters Degree in Educational Administration (minimum)

– Administrative experience

– School Administrator Certification, Special Education Supervisor Approval preferred, Special Education Certification preferred
JOB FUNCTIONS:
– Supervise program classroom teachers including curriculum implementation support, professional learning guidance, special education process development including IEP and behavior plans

– Supervise teacher assistants in the special education program classrooms

– Supervise itinerant service providers who support Char-Em special education classrooms including management of caseload and coordination of services

– Complete annual staff evaluation including observations as required by law and collaboration with staff on goals (including program secretary)

– Make informed decisions around class list structure and staff assignments

– Collaborate with classroom teams to analyze student data (IEP goals, progress monitoring data, behavior implementation data, fidelity check data) to support needs of students and modify instruction as needed

– Develop and maintain strong and positive relationships with classroom staff through consistent team meetings and on-site support

– Support continuous improvement plan implementation including using data to inform the development of the school improvement plan in collaboration with the Director of Special Education

– Collaborate with the Director of Special Education on curriculum decisions and coordinate implementation with classroom staff

– Support classroom staff in implementing PBIS strategies

– Manage discipline and behavior for students in collaboration with the classroom teachers and with input from other itinerant staff as needed

– Maintain compliance with emergency seclusion and restraint regulations

– Collaboration with families to connect with resources and develop partnerships to promote successful student outcomes

– Co-lead threat assessments in coordination with the local district, law enforcement, and Director of Special Education while ensuring compliance with the local district policies

– Work with transportation department to coordinate specialized transportation services for program students

– Partner with local agencies such as Community Mental Health, Michigan Rehabilitative Services, and Child Protective Services to address student needs

– Partner with Early Childhood department and Director of Special Education on student transitions into the special education program

– Partner with local districts and Director of Special Education on student transitions into adult programming

– Supervision of classroom supply budgets, staff professional learning budgets, as well as input to the overall special education program budget

– Develop and nurture positive and collaborative relationships with all local districts, especially those partnering with Char-Em ISD in which our program classrooms are located.

– Collaborate with local district administration to coordinate inclusion opportunities for students

– Coordinate with local district counselors for students working towards a diploma to ensure appropriate credits are attained

– Review, approve, and communicate with all staff (including transportation) regarding community outings

– Coordinate annual program events/activities (Prom, Graduation, Camp Daggett, etc.)

– In collaboration with the co-principal, the North principal will provide state assessment coordination for all program classrooms as necessary

– In collaboration with the co-principal, the South principal will review student attendance for truancy and communicate with the secretary to send out letters as well as communicate with law enforcement as necessary

– Coordinate and supervise Extended School Year program and 200-day summer programming including student qualification, staffing, and day to day supervision

– Participate in meetings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required of position

– Maintain predictable, reliable, and punctual attendance

– Other responsibilities as assigned at the direction of the Supervisor or Superintendent
