SummaryThe Director will lead all fundraising efforts to increase support for the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center. The Director will manage and solicit a portfolio of major gift prospects, endowment and expendable gifts to support research, teaching, and patient care missions. This position is also responsible for leading, the direct supervision and mentoring of gift officers assigned to the Ophthalmology team.

The Office of Development supports a culture of flexibility, and a hybrid work arrangement is possible for this position.
Responsibilities*
Strategic Planning, Donor and Prospect Management
  • Lead, inspire and coordinate the fundraising for area assigned.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive multiyear fundraising plan to increase philanthropic support for area.
  • Utilizing new Michigan Medicine grateful patient initiative, develop strategies designed to realize the current and lifetime giving potential of individual prospects.
  • Personally maintain a portfolio of approximately 125-200 major, principal and planned gift prospects, maintaining frequent contact with prospects, university leaders, and volunteers spending approximately 60-70% of time on direct fundraising efforts.
  • Conduct approximately 100-120 face to face visits with prospects and donors per year and participate in approximately 20-35 solicitations per year.
  • Plan systematic, appropriate and effective solicitation strategies for major, principal and planned gift prospects including collaborating with key partners at Michigan Medicine and UM Office of University Development (OUD).
  • Work collaboratively with other development personnel in identifying referral opportunities and supporting Michigan Medicine and campaign goals.
  • Increase philanthropic support for research, translational science, faculty support and patient care for the benefit of the assigned area.
  • Create, oversee and assist in the development and execution of annual plans for fundraising for assigned area by working closely in coordination with appropriate Michigan Medicine leadership and gift officers.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of comprehensive, timely and innovative stewardship as well as appropriate annual fund and special gift programs.
  • Coordinate and facilitate activity that will directly result in prospect identification, engagement and successful solicitations, including advising chairs, department heads and development colleagues on the culture, expectations and needs of Michigan Medicine development constituents.
Collaboration and Management
  • Lead and inspire a team of gift officers assigned to area.
  • Provide guidance, mentoring and support to development officers for department based and related programmatic funding priorities.
  • Have a comprehensive understanding of the Michigan Medicine priorities and make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific Michigan Medicine Development and University needs.
  • Provide and support the development officers with both internal and external group, volunteers and fundraising board staff support in the identification, qualification, and evaluation of major, principal, and planned gift prospects.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with colleagues throughout the health system and University by demonstrating leadership in the development community.
  • Through collegial consultation and cooperation, demonstrate and be a model of collaboration in the development community while representing Michigan Medicine Development values and its unique role at the University of Michigan.

  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six years or more of progressively responsible development experience in an academic health system setting with a comprehensive development program.
  • Supervisory experience. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage, motivate and mentor major gift officers.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise a high degree of sound judgment and diplomacy with a commitment to confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated success in raising capital, program support and endowment gifts.
  • Proven success working in a multifaceted development environment and the ability to think strategically in a complex academic environment.
  • Experience working in healthcare fundraising including proven experience with securing gifts of $100K and more.
  • Excellent written and communication skills with an engaging, genuine and mature personal style.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as a proven record of working collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to travel frequently and adjust schedule to meet donor needs.
  • Reliable internet service.
Desired Qualifications*
  • Master's degree.
  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan organization, policies and procedures.
  • Experience in an academic health system setting with a comprehensive development program and grateful patient fundraising.
Work Locations
The onsite location for this position is an office suite at the 777 Building. This provides free, on-site parking for staff.
This position may be eligible for flexible work opportunities at the discretion of the hiring department. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on the business needs of the hiring department, throughout the course of employment. This position works both onsite and remotely based on the business needs of the unit.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
