SummaryThe Department of Psychiatry is seeking a Research Area Specialist Associate to serve as a Research Interviewer/Therapist to support NIH and VA funded research projects focusing on suicide prevention. The studies are conducted in inpatient psychiatric settings at Michigan Medicine and the Ann Arbor VA hospitals and will be conducted through 2029. The NIH funded study will involve interviews with adults hospitalized following a suicide attempt to identify warning signs for suicide attempts. The VA clinical trial will test the effectiveness of a brief therapeutic intervention (that the successful candidate will deliver) for reducing suicide risk following hospital discharge.
In this role, you will work in an exciting environment which provides support for professional growth activities, opportunities to connect and collaborate with other research therapists/interventionists and research teams within the University of Michigan and the VA, and potential opportunities to submit and present at professional conferences in collaboration with Principal Investigator and research team. Notably, they will be doing work that has a real impact on patients' lives.

Responsibilities*
  • Deliver an app-based intervention for a federally funded study on suicidal thoughts and behaviors to research participants. This would involve delivering and recording the 1 session intervention, the control condition, and two follow-up calls providing appropriate resources and information for the intervention group.
  • Conduct structured and semi-structured study interviews and assessments.
  • Conduct suicide risk assessments when appropriate as per study protocol.
  • Provide clinical coverage for research activities and guidance to research assistants when questions arise.
  • Conduct medical chart review and data abstractions.
  • Assist with coverage of research activities as needed, such as participant recruitment and consenting.
  • Other administrative duties as needed.
Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a related field.
Desired Qualifications*
  • A Master's Degree in Social Work.
  • Licensure as a MSW (LMSW; please indicate licensure status in cover letter).
  • Experience conducting research interviews and assessments (SCID, SIDP, Timeline Follow-Back, Scale for Suicide Ideation).
  • Experience working in Emergency Department, Psychiatric Inpatient Unit, and/or VA clinical setting.
  • Experience with high-risk populations/topics (suicide, mental health) and understanding of HIPAA rules and regulations.
  • Experience (in either a clinical or research capacity) with patients who have had recent suicidal thoughts or attempts and/or with Veteran populations.
  • Comfort discussing sensitive topics with vulnerable populations.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum direction and seek guidance when appropriate; use time efficiently; and take initiative to problem-solve.

This a full time position.

This is a hybrid position with in person location in Ann Arbor.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings.
