SummaryThis position is a split position within the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) Training Core and Technical Services groups. The primary function within the Training Core group is to train research personnel on animal research techniques and procedures. The primary function within the Technical Services group is to perform similar animal-related techniques and procedures for university investigators on a recharge fee-for-service basis. Techniques and procedures include dosing, monitoring, blood or tissue collection, euthanasia, or other requests. The majority of the services will focus on rodents, but other species may be included. This position involves public speaking in a teaching role and meeting customer's needs while providing excellent customer service. This position also involves professional verbal and written communication and frequent collaboration with team members. Applicants must be able to manage their time, prioritize tasks and work independently. Applicants must be comfortable and able to work with the Microsoft office suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), as well as with other software systems utilized by the ULAM Training Core and Technical Services. Applicants should have experience with rodents (at minimum) and should be able to perform basic laboratory animal techniques. Applicants must work collaboratively, with researchers as well as members of the Technical Service and Training Core teams. All training and services must be performed in compliance with regulatory guidelines.

Responsibilities*
Training Core tasks: 50% of responsibilities
  • Administers, organizes, and conducts training and educational programs based on animal care and use protocols, guidelines, regulations and SOP requirements
  • Must be able to learn and train various classes and techniques on animals including; but not limited to: dose administration, blood collection, husbandry procedures, handling, restraint and surgical preparation and performance
  • Maintain a high level of team work and collaboration
  • Designs and develops highly effective and engaging training classes for multiple areas of need including external and internal customers
  • Regularly update current training class/program content based on regulations, policies, guidelines, SOPs or general system enhancements, and identifies improvement opportunities
  • Demonstrates adaptability in regards to training classes or programs
  • Maintains records of training activities and employee progress and monitors effectiveness of programs
  • Maintain, develop and amend training protocols and documents as needed
Technical Services Job Tasks: 50% of the responsibilities
  • Weekend and Holiday work may be expected
  • Perform various routes of test material administration or blood collection procedures as appropriate for species
  • Identify proper storage conditions for samples collected and submit to laboratories as requested
  • Conduct general health monitoring, bodyweights, feeding, and care, animal identification and genotyping procedures; document clinical observations
  • Perform euthanasia and post mortem procedures as requested
  • Perform other research manipulations as identified
  • Record collected data and service time into forms or spreadsheets
  • Attend services meetings with PI's laboratory staff, and participate in lab meetings
  • Perform data entry into Microsoft Office applications
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Maintains good rapport with researchers, training core team members, and other ULAM groups.
  • Ability to function independently as well as a team member in a team setting
  • Understands customer needs and provides them with the right level of service
  • Verbal and written communication is professional, easy to understand and clear.
  • Utilizes and prioritizes time effectively
  • Seeks out work in times of low workload
  • This position requires considerable use of arms and legs and activities such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling of materials which at times weigh as much as 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to push and pull equipment weighing up to 500 pounds
  • Must be able to work at a level of up to 6' to 7' above the floor
  • Must be able to perform in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal byproducts and bedding materials for prolonged periods of time
Required Qualifications*
  • 3 or more years of Laboratory animal science experience
  • 2-4 years of training experience
  • High school diploma
  • LAT certification, or LAT certification completed within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule
Desired Qualifications*
  • Associates degree or Bachelor’s degree
  • Rodent technical experience
