Location: Lansing, MI - State of Michigan Laboratory

On call rotation holidays and weekends

Purpose: This position functions as a Laboratory Information Systems Analyst in the Laboratory Systems Section of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Bureau of Laboratories (MDHHS BOL). The individual in this position will be an essential member of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) team supporting two LIMS used at the BOL. This position will primarily contribute to the development, support, and implementation of STARLIMS used at the BOL in Lansing and our Regional Laboratories located throughout the state with secondary back-up support of the Newborn Screening Program LIMS (Revvity). Both LIMS systems support the laboratory's business processes including specimen accessioning, sample tracking, inventory control, laboratory reporting, statistical analysis, and electronic public health reporting.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Enhance existing systems and work processes within two BOL LIMS: STARLIMS and Revvity.
  • Support current operations to ensure that laboratory testing and reporting operate effectively.
  • Advise and assist with IT workflows (i.e., FTPs, BaseSpace cloud service) as new processes are considered for both BOL Divisions.
  • Advise and assist DTMB IT support with the necessary management of BOL servers.
  • General end user IT support, e.g., new printer installs, monitor set up, scanner troubleshooting, etc.
  • Work independently on the development of work processes presented by BOL management and used by internal and external partners, e.g., ETOR web, ETOR HL7, archive data.
  • Create management reports and queries of the database as requested.
  • Support, test, and document software upgrades.
  • Interact as needed with vendor and State of Michigan IT staff.
  • Report progress at weekly meetings.
  • Maintain a positive, strong, credible, professional, and interpersonal relationship with all parties relevant of MDHHS/MPHI projects, and represent the best interest of MDHHS/MPHI at all times.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or similar field.

Experience: Experience in laboratory testing, laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and/or health systems is strongly preferred. Experience or familiarity with Crystal Reports, SQL Server Management Studio, or at least one other programming language is desirable.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Must have ability to work at a computer and operate normal office equipment. Job involves keyboarding and viewing a VDT screen up to 100% of the time.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This person is a key member of the Laboratory Information Management System Implementation team. This person also ensures that the needs of the laboratory staff and external clients are met in a timely manner and maintains professional relationships.
