Job Title: University Chaplain and Executive Director of Spiritual Formation
Reports to: Executive Vice President

POSITION SUMMARY:
The University Chaplain and Executive Director of Spiritual Formation will serve as a spiritual leader and mentor, nurturing the faith and well-being of students, faculty, and staff within the MACU community. Grounded in the teachings and values of the Church of God traditions, this role will provide pastoral care, guidance, and support to individuals as they navigate their academic, personal, and spiritual journeys. Additionally, this role will oversee chapel services, organize religious events, and foster a culture of Christian fellowship, service, and discipleship both on campus and online.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Pastoral Care:
  • Provide compassionate pastoral counseling and support to students, faculty, and staff, addressing their spiritual, emotional, and relational needs within the context of Church of God beliefs and practices.
  • Offer prayer, encouragement, and guidance for individuals seeking spiritual direction, discernment, and growth in their faith journey.
  • Respond to crises, emergencies, and challenges within the University community, offering pastoral care and support in alignment with Church of God principles and values.
Worship and Discipleship:
  • Lead and coordinate vibrant chapel services, including chapel gatherings, prayer meetings, and special events, fostering an atmosphere of reverence, joy, and spiritual renewal.
  • Develop and implement programs and initiatives to facilitate Christian discipleship, spiritual formation, and holistic growth among students, faculty, and staff.
  • Equip and empower campus and student leaders to participate in worship, ministry, and outreach activities that reflect the teachings and values of the Church of God traditions.
Teaching and Biblical Education:
  • Provide opportunities for theological exploration, Bible study, and spiritual formation through seminars, workshops, and educational events rooted in Church of God doctrine and theology both on-campus and online.
  • Facilitate discussions on faith-related topics, biblical principles, and ethical issues relevant to University life and contemporary society from a Church of God perspective both on-campus and online.
  • Mentor and disciple students and staff interested in ministry, missions, or vocational service, guiding them in their spiritual and professional development both on-campus and online.
Community Engagement:
  • Foster relationships and build bridges with individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, promoting dialogue, understanding, and reconciliation grounded in the love of Christ.
  • Engage in outreach initiatives, service projects, and collaborative efforts with local churches and nonprofit ministries to meet the broader community's spiritual, social, and practical needs.
  • Partner with University departments, student organizations, and campus ministries to integrate the Wesleyan values, traditions, and mission into the fabric of campus life and learning.
Administrative and Collaborative Leadership:
  • Maintain accurate records of pastoral interactions, counseling sessions, and program participation, ensuring confidentiality and professionalism in all pastoral duties.
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for chaplaincy programs, events, and initiatives, collaborating with University stakeholders to advance the mission and vision of the institution within the context of the Church of God's identity and heritage.
  • Participate in Church of God and other church conferences, gatherings, and networks to stay connected with leadership, resources, and best practices in ministry and spiritual formation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate should possess the following:
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relational abilities, passionate about building community, fostering unity, and promoting spiritual growth.

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively within a diverse and dynamic University environment while upholding Church of God principles and standards.
  • Commitment to personal spiritual growth, ongoing professional development, and adherence to the Church of God’s ethical guidelines and theological principles.
  • Proven leadership in a complex organizational setting, preferably within a college/university environment.
  • Proven ability to build meaningful relationships with faculty, staff, and student.
  • Ability to be seen as an essential team member and active partner with faculty, staff, students, and families.
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate assigned staff while building a highly effective working team.
  • Ability to interpret and apply University policies and procedures; ability to resolve issues, resulting in mutual respect and tolerance for varying points of view.
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize administrative applications of information technology.
  • Ability to articulate and model the MACU’s mission, vision, and values

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Ordained minister or licensed pastor within the Church of God with a deep commitment to its doctrines, beliefs, and values.
  • Master’s degree in Divinity, Theology, Ministry, or related field from an accredited institution (Doctorate preferred), with a solid theological foundation in Church of God theology.
  • Proven pastoral experience and counseling skills, with a heart for serving and shepherding individuals in their spiritual journey within a Church of God context.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
Receptive and committed to learning and utilizing other software that supports the Office of the Executive Vice President.

  • Sitting or standing for long periods and frequent viewing of computer screens and other resources
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
  • University hours are Monday-Thursday 8:00 am-6:00 pm and Friday 8:00 am- 5:00 pm.
  • Most workspaces are set up in an open office environment.
  • Occasionally, nights and weekends are required for events.
  • Some travel may be required using University vehicles.
