Middlebury College is Hiring a Library assistant Near Middlebury, VT

The Interlibrary Loan Department is looking for highly committed students who can work independently, cooperatively, thoughtfully, and with scrupulous attention to detail to provide materials to Middlebury and other library patrons.

Skilled ILL assistants routinely use many software systems with a particular focus on advanced tasks such as handling unusual formats, using specialized machinery, and self-motivating across tasks.

Core Responsibilities :

  • Process borrowed items in both ILL and LIS systems for use by local patrons and prioritize the work of other student employees.
  • Locate library items in both physical and online collections, including article / passages in larger items.
  • Capture passages from books, journals, databases, microform, maps, etc and deliver them to patrons. Enhance accessibility of PDF captures through application of accessibility software (OCR, etc).
  • Use and troubleshoot specialized equipment including the BookEye Scanner and microform readers.
  • Troubleshoot citation errors and correctly identify, capture, and deliver articles as requested.
  • Navigate items in unfamiliar languages by use of citations, deductive reasoning, and translation tools.
  • Provide guidance and training to other student employees.
  • Determine and enact best shipping method for each item depending on size / expense / destination of item sent.

Requirements

Position Prerequisites :

  • Ability to prioritize tasks based on departmental policy, time of day, and availability of fellow staff. Will be expected to supervise and train other student employees
  • Attention to detail and ability to infer missing information based on research and deductive reasoning
  • Self-motivation across shifts and a variety of different tasks
  • Ability to complete extensive training to gain proficiency in numerous systems and specialized machinery
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both coworkers and supervisors
  • Comfort manipulating various PDF and image file types
  • Troubleshoot citation errors submitted by patrons to correctly identify, capture, and deliver requested materials
  • Navigate items in unfamiliar languages through the use of citations, deductive reasoning, and translation tools

Must be able to retrieve items from all three floors of the library, pack and lift boxes up to twenty pounds in weight, and comfortably work at computer and specialized scanner stations for long lengths of time.

Student Employment Eligibility :

Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return.

If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions.

Some may be restricted due to financial aid status. International students (non-resident aliens) may not work off campus unless they have applied for and received work authorization from the United States government.

An F-1 visa does not give work authorization.) Off campus work study positions are available only to citizens on financial aid with a federal work study component .

Student are not eligible to work remotely from International locations.

Hour Limitations :

All student employees are limited to working no more than 20 hours per week in on campus jobs during the academic year (this includes exam periods).

The only exception is when there is a full week when school is not in session. Specifically : February recess, Spring recess, and full weeks of December or summer recess.

During these time periods only, students can work up to 40 hours per week. International Students : Visa restrictions prohibit international students from exceeding 20 hours of work per academic calendar week.
