EDUCATION:

  • Master’s Degree in Education, preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, required
  • Texas Teaching Certification, required


EXPERIENCE:

  • Three years as a classroom teacher, required
  • Three years in an educational leadership position, preferred

Position Function/Purpose

The purpose of this position is to support the work of the Student Services office to create a safe and positive school environment for students, with a focus on ensuring that students attend every day. The behavior coordinator will serve as a liaison between campuses, students, parents, central office administration, and law enforcement agencies to improve student attendance. In collaboration with the rest of the Student Services team, the behavior coordinator will implement programs to proactively improve school culture and impact incentivize student attendance.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

General Student Services

1. Support all district programs related to student culture, discipline, attendance, and behavior.

2. Support the interests of students and families to ensure that all students receive the support needed to be successful in school.

3. Implement the district’s policy related to student attendance through collaboration with school and community leaders.

4. Strategically responds to student attendance data with interventions to prevent truancy and early school dropout.

5. Work in conjunction with the Special Services Department to provide wraparound supports for students and maintain common vocabulary of systems and procedures.

6. Maintain a working knowledge of current research-based interventions to foster positive student culture on campuses and prevent at-risk behaviors.


Truancy Preventive

7. Assist individual students and families in addressing attendance needs, including access to transportation, family responsibilities, illness, etc.

8. Promote positive school/home relations through building strong relationships with at-risk families and school attendance coordinators.

9. Maintain a working knowledge of community resources to utilize in support of families.

10. Demonstrate awareness of programs and educational options in order to direct students and parents to appropriate services offered by MISD.

11. Develop and implement a comprehensive plan to improve student attendance. This includes communication of information as well as guidance and training to instructional and district staff, families, and students.


Truancy Compliance/Intervention

12. Investigate violations of compulsory school attendance requirements.

13. Communicate accurately, respectfully, and effectively with families from all backgrounds. 14. Provide support to campus administrators, counselors, and teachers in monitoring and complying with student compulsory attendance requirements.

15. Collaborate with the MISD Dropout Prevention Coordinator, Collegiate Coaches, Community in Schools, and Counselors to provide wraparound support to schools and families to prevent truancy.

16. Maintain an investigative record on each compulsory school attendance violation and related court action.

17. Respond appropriately and consistently to referrals.

18. Prepare accurate attendance reports and court documents.

19. Report information about home visits to school staff.

20. Conduct conferences with students, families, and school staff.

21. Conduct required home visits.

22. Represent the district in all compulsory attendance court sessions, including during the summer months.

23. Provide ongoing case management support to at-risk and economically disadvantaged students on the school campus. Enroll, assess need, develop a case management plan, provide services, track progress, document services, and assess the progress of students.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must be able to maintain emotional control under stress. Occasionally required to travel to facilities within the district. May be required to work after school and weekends.
