Job Title: Behavior Specialist Reports to: Director of Special Populations Dept./School: Special Education Exemption Status: Exempt Date Revised: 6/12/2024 Primary Purpose: The Behavioral Specialist plays a critical role in supporting the district's behavior management efforts by providing consultation and guidance to address specific behavioral needs, including non-compliance, aggression, and social skills deficits. A key aspect of this role is the collection and analysis of data to inform the development of individualized behavior intervention plans and supports. The Behavioral Specialist collaborates closely with the Behavior Supports Coordinator, teachers, staff, and families to develop and implement effective solutions that meet the unique needs of each student (general education and special education). Qualifications: Education/Certification: Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification preferred Master’s Degree in Special Education, School Psychology (LSSP), and or Social Work (LCSW) preferred Bachelor’s Degree with experience in behavior management Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Calm and patient demeanor Respond to crisis situations, such as student aggression or self-injury, and develop strategies to prevent future crises Training in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports Ability to model best practices working with behavior in general education and special education classrooms Ability to maintain confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information Experience: A minimum of 2-5 years of experience working with students with behavioral needs Major Responsibilities and Duties: 1. Assist the special education teachers, general education teachers, and parents in utilizing assessment data available on the student for individualizing behavioral interventions. 2. Interpret information about student behavior and conditions as related to learning. 3. Consult with teachers, support professional personnel, parents and community agencies concerning prevention and/or intervention strategies relating to behavioral problems of students. 4. Provide crisis intervention services. 5. Provide staff development training in mental health, crisis intervention, and other areas involving behavior in the schools. 6. Develop and implement behavioral programs, such as behavioral skills training and social skills groups. 7. Compose reports that meet established standards of practice and complete reports with specified timelines. 8. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required by federal and state rules and regulations and District policy and procedures. 9. Comply with federal and state law, Commissioner’s rules, and District policy and procedures. 10. Present a positive role model for students that supports the mission of the school district. 11. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors. 12. Comply with all District and local campus routines and regulations. 13. Develop needed professional skills appropriate to job assignment. 14. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible. 15. Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs. 16. Complete all other duties as may be assigned.
