Job Summary/Basic Function

The department of Earth Sciences is accepting applications for a Temporary, part-time instructor responsible for teaching online in both 7 week and 15 week course terms for the Masters of Science in Emergency Management program.
The selected candidate will teach graduate courses in the MS Emergency Management degree program. The MS Emergency Management degree is designed to produce exemplary industry professionals with cross-disciplinary skills. Topics taught within the curriculum include professional writing, risk communication, emergency management planning, business continuity, GIS applications, social dimensions of disaster, mental health and trauma, as well as terrorism and homeland security.
In addition to teaching, there is an expectation for scholarship and service commensurate with the assignment.
The purpose of this posting is to generate a pool of qualified faculty. Applications submitted will be reviewed on an as needed basis based on enrollment. Anyone meeting the qualifications may be contacted for an interview and potentially hired when a need exists. Required Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Emergency Management or related discipline.
  • Evidence of ability to successfully teach diverse student populations.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD or ABD in Emergency Management or related discipline.
  • Specialty certifications in emergency management.
  • Practical experience in emergency management and disaster preparedness.
  • Certifications in FEMA NIMS ( ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 and 800).
  • Experience in teaching/conducting exercises and training events.
  • Strong all-hazards understanding of emergency management and disaster preparedness.
  • Mentoring experience.

TEACHING AND PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
The Department of Earth Sciences is committed to creating inclusive, accessible, and equitable learning environments and emphasizes engaging learner-focused approaches to online instruction. Millersville University occassionally needs temporary, part-time instructors to fulfill teaching responsibilities in the Department of Earth Sciences.

Part-time faculty members shall maintain a prorated number of office hours each week, at a minimum of twenty-five (25) minutes for each workload hour taught, at such days, times and locations as will accommodate the needs of the students.
This position requires online instruction, and does not require presence on Millersville University's campus. This position is contingent upon sufficient enrollments in assigned classes.

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION :
The Masters of Science of Emergency Management program resides within the Department of Earth Sciences. The Department of Earth Sciences is one of nine departments in the College of Science and Technology, with about 300 students enrolled in degree programs offered including BS in emergency management, BS in environmental Earth and ocean sciences, BSEd in secondary education in the Earth sciences, BS in meteorology, MS in emergency management, and MS in integrated scientific applications with concentrations in environmental Earth system management; geoinformatics; weather intelligence and risk management; and space weather and environment. We are a department of 11 faculty (four meteorologists, three geologists, two oceanographers, and two emergency managers), Weather Information Center director, full-time computer and networking specialist, secretary, and several adjuncts for the specialized graduate programs.

  • Teach courses online at the higher education level using lectures, demonstrations, discussions, using online tools and/or equipment and/or other appropriate tools appropriate modes of education delivery.
  • Able to record and calculate grades, prepare course outline and syllabus, develop course and lesson plans, engage in the selection of appropriate textbooks and other teaching aids necessary to the delivery of instruction.
  • Use computer for email, obtain information on websites, prepare class documents, grade papers, submit final grades online and other duties related to teaching and advising students and serving the department, college, university and community.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risks.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and mouse.
