Minnesota Council of Nonprofits is Hiring a Housing Case Manager Near Paul, MN

Job Title: Housing Coordinator Department: Refugee Services Reports To: Senior Program Manager, Refugee Services FLSA Status: 1.0 FTE, Exempt Prepared Date: 6/5/2024 Salary Range: $50,000-$52,000 (depending on experience) Organization Description: The International Institute of Minnesota (IIMN) is a dynamic organization that provides services to maximize the talents and opportunities New Americans bring to our state. IIMN assists low-income New Americans in their transition to a new homeland by providing comprehensive services for successful integration. IIMN serves more than 4,000 New Americans annually with new arrival social services to employment placement and advancement through to U.S. Citizenship attainment. Programs are divided into three primary areas: Refugee Services, Education and Employment Training Services, and Immigration Services. IIMN also provides advocacy for policy reforms and supports systems change that improve opportunities for New Americans to move their lives forward. Position Purpose : The Housing Case Manager works closely with the Refugee Services team to ensure safe, sanitary, and affordable housing for clients. This includes locating affordable housing for newly arrived refugee families, coordinating lease-signing and initial payment, arranging set-up of furniture and household goods, responding to maintenance concerns, and assisting with resolving landlord-tenant disputes. This position also procures household goods donations, programmatic donations, tracks inventory for household goods, and trains housing volunteers to assist in housing set-ups. Position Duties and Responsibilities: Locate initial housing for refugee families prior to their arrival in Minnesota by connecting with landlords and negotiating leases and rental terms on behalf of clients Coordinate furniture orders and delivery via Bridging and other local organizations to ensure families’ basic needs items are provided in accordance with federal guidelines Lead housing set-ups, including moving furniture into appropriate rooms, setting up beds and furniture, and ensuring the apartment or home is clean and functional prior to move-in
  • Manage on-site donation inventory for basic needs and housing items Maintain accurate case notes related to housing, furniture, budgeting, and related expenses
  • Provide pre-arrival services to clients including purchasing culturally appropriate groceries and setting up utilities, as needed
  • Outreach to and develop relationships with new property managers and companies to further grow IIMN’s landlord database, and document all new connections
  • Attend housing meetings with local Resettlement Agencies, and others as assigned, to advocate for refugee and immigrant housing needs and foster collaboration with local organizations
  • Support case managers in resolution of housing issues between landlords and clients
  • Communicate volunteer needs to the IIMN’s volunteer management staff
  • Attend weekly, monthly, and quarterly staff meetings
  • Other duties as assigned Position Requirements (Experience and Qualifications) :
  • Commitment to the human rights and general welfare of refugees and immigrants Must be capable of working in a fast-paced, multicultural environment, take initiative, and be able to handle and prioritize multiple assignments
  • Housing, rental, or property management experience required; familiarity with local Twin Cities rental trends and practices preferred
  • Two years of relevant work experience (rental, administrative, case management)
  • Ability to carry, lift, and move furniture and beds, and to assemble furniture and bed frames
  • Customer service-oriented with the ability to develop and maintain relationships with landlords, property companies, and vendors
  • Must have strong organizational skills and attention to detail including comprehensive case noting Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution strategies Bilingual in English and Arabic, French, Karen, Oromo, Pashto, Somali, or Spanish preferred
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, insurance, and own car, and be willing to transport clients in personal vehicle, if needed Physical Demands:
  • Frequent lifting (25 pounds or greater), bending, pulling, and carrying.
  • Use of manual dexterity, tactile, visual, and audio acuity
  • Use of repetitive motion, prolonged periods of sitting, and sustained visual and mental applications and demands.
