This Laboratory Scientist 1 exists within the Environmental Laboratory Section in the MDH Public Health laboratory. It will provide analytical support to the Inorganic Chemistry Unit. The principal responsibility of the role include:
  • Support the analysis of wastewater samples using techniques and instrumentation appropriate for detection of pathogens
  • Provide analytical results to clientele to monitor, ensure, and protect the public health.
  • Follow established procedures as well as contribute to the daily preparation, concentration, extraction, and analysis of DNA and RNA from wastewater.
This position will be responsible for the traveling to several sites throughout the greater metropolitan area to collect samples from partnered facilities and other laboratories using a state-owned vehicle.

Minimum QualificationsTo facilitate proper crediting, please ensure that your resume clearly describes your experience in the areas listed below and indicates the beginning and ending month and year for each job held.   • Bachelors degree in Microbiology or equivalent formal sciences.
  • One (1) year of experience working in a regulated laboratory environment (CLIA, EPA, or ISO 17025 accredited).
Minimum Qualifications to be assessed during the interview:
  • Experience using standard biosafety practices.
  • Ability to follow written laboratory protocols and quality control procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Analytical laboratory skills.
  • Observe precautions for laboratory contamination procedures with amplified RNA or DNA.
  • Experience working with and preparing reagents and working standards for molecular based methodologies.
  • Technical skills in the preparation and analysis of molecular-based assays with environmental sample or wastewater.
  • Experience following quality control procedures and protocol to ensure accuracy of tests using documented procedures.
  • Experience using dPCR.
  • Experience using ISCO portable wastewater samplers.
Additional RequirementsThis position requires successful completion of a background check.
Incumbent must maintain a valid driver's license and insurance as driving of a state vehicle will be required in this position.
