This Laboratory Scientist 3 position will help support the Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit. Job Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Performing Laboratory Response Network (LRN) validated molecular and culture based diagnostic tests for high-consequence pathogens in the Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) Unit.
  • Providing routine testing for the DHS BioWatch monitoring program.
  • Maintaining a quality system for these assays.
  • Performing other LRN bioterrorism (BT) protocols.
  • Assisting Units within the IDL clinical laboratory in performing other diagnostic tests.
  • Performing a variety of other tasks to support the emergency preparedness and response unit.
This position requires weekend and holiday work, on a rotating basis - typically around 1:5 weekends and 2-3 holiday shifts per year. All positions within the MDH Public Health Lab will work to cultivate an inclusive work environment for all, with respect to diversity and equity.
Minimum QualificationsTo facilitate proper crediting, please ensure that your resume/application clearly describes your experience in the areas listed below and indicates the beginning and ending month and year for each job held. Only applicants whose resumes clearly demonstrate fulfillment of each of these minimum qualifications will be considered for this position.
  • Three (3) years of professional laboratory experience in molecular diagnostics and analytical testing.
Minimum Qualifications to be assessed during interview:
  • Experience handling and processing samples containing potentially highly hazardous biological threat agents.
  • Experience with method development and method validation.
  • Ability to conduct independent and formal research studies for special projects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and train other staff members.
Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, chemistry, public health, laboratory science or related science field may substitute for one year of experience; Master’s degree may substitute for 18 months of experience. PhD may substitute for 2 years.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in microbiology, chemistry, public health, laboratory science or related science field.
  • Experience with high complexity clinical diagnostics.
  • Experience in a CLIA or CAP certified laboratory.
Physical RequirementsOccasional transportation of up to 20 pounds.
