Job Details
DescriptionThis is an entry-level legal position. The Assistant Counsel will draft, revise, and process agreements and contracts under the supervision of the Associate Counsel and Senior Vice President General Counsel, Legal Services, and Risk Management. Manage legal needs of Minnesota Sports and Entertainment entities with a focus on the Iowa Wild, Venture 32, and St Paul RiverCentre. Act as liaison between the Legal Department and other departments ensuring legal agreements are in place and are in compliance with Company policies and current laws and regulations, including an active social media presence and players' and facilities’ insurance needs.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions
  • Coordinate with Senior Vice President General Counsel, Legal Services and Risk Management and Associate Counsel, internal departments, and external clients from contract initiation through execution and final sign-off. Draft, revise, and review legal documents and contracts for MSE entities including sponsorship agreements, employment contracts, vendor and/or partner agreements, and purchase agreements.
  • Manage legal process for Iowa Wild team including contract negotiation and terminations, proposals, sponsorships, promotions, and other various contracts, evaluating compliance with rules and regulations, maintaining active communication with internal and external parties to ensure timely execution and handling of legal needs.
  • Interface with applicable internal departments to develop contractual documents for specific departments.
  • Ensure that the organization’s active social media presence adheres to evolving governmental rules and regulations, proactively reviewing social media presence to ensure full legal compliance.
  • Prepare and coordinate Minnesota Sports & Entertainment (MSE) trademark filings and renewal efforts. Maintain and update the master contract database and filing system.
  • Conduct research on a variety of legal topics including but not limited to gambling control board statutes, social media rules and regulations, COVID-19/public health-related statutes, ordinances and guidelines, etc.
  • Maintain current knowledge and familiarity with laws, regulations, and precedents.
  • Partner with internal teams in addition to external insurance brokers, carriers, National Hockey League personnel, team sponsors, and city government personnel.
Position RequirementsFormal Education And Certifications
  • A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree is required.
Knowledge And Experience
  • 0-2 years of law firm, in-house, corporate legal, licensing, legal support, or business affairs experience; or equivalent education experience.
  • Ability to analyze the impact of proposed agreements and contracts; experience with drafting, reviewing, and executing a variety of agreements and contracts.
  • Experience or familiarity with intellectual property (trademarks, licensing, copyright) Risk Management knowledge or experience.
  • Proven understanding and prioritizing confidentiality.
  • Know when to push back and how to manage problem situations.
  • Ability to articulate potential problem situations and offer thoughtful recommendations to managers.
  • Demonstrated business negotiation and research skills.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology and procedures.
  • Use of computer-based research tools and resources.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Products.
  • Current knowledge of social media rules and regulations.
