Organization Description

Mission Economic Development Agency - Building on its 48-year history, and rooted in San Francisco’s Mission District, MEDA is advancing a national equity movement by building Latino prosperity, community ownership and civic power. Our direct service programs serve 8,000 individuals each year through rental and homeownership counseling, small business development, digital literacy, workforce development, financial education and free tax preparation. We also devote resources to research and evaluation, community organizing and advocacy. In the process, MEDA is helping to develop best practices in the field, and shares its model across the state and country.

MEDA is the lead backbone agency for the Mission Promise Neighborhood (www.missionpromise.org), a neighborhood based effort to improve education and create family economic stability for Mission District families through a cradle- to college- to career continuum of services. MEDA recently launched two new programs- Community Real Estate development and a federally certified CDFI, Fondo Adelante, to further respond to the needs of the community it serves.

Position Description

The Development Manager is part of an eight-member Development and Communications team. The Manager manages a diverse portfolio and high volume of grants, primarily government, corporate, and select foundation grants, to fund MEDA programs and initiatives. This position is ideal for someone who would love to craft thoughtful and impactful narratives about equity for immigrant and Latinx communities to secure financial support from aligned funders.

This role will lead prospect research, proposal development, grant writing, and grant proposal packing with grant funding from government agencies (local, state, federal), foundations, and corporations. The Manager works collaboratively with program staff to craft sophisticated grant strategies and develops proposals from concept to final submission. We welcome candidates who have extensive experience in a specific grant type and who are willing to learn and adapt their grant writing to other types of grants. The ideal candidate must have exceptional writing and project management skills, the ability to learn quickly on the job, and strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with various internal and external stakeholders.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Grant Writing, Management, and Relationship Stewarding:

  • Develop, write, and project-manage proposals for government (local, state, and federal), corporate, and foundation funding.
  • Monitor proposal guidelines and deadlines to ensure timely and complete submissions.
  • Work with MEDA staff to gather financial, programmatic, research, and evaluation data.
  • Manage a grant-writing portfolio of grants ranging from $1 million - $3 million.
  • Design programmatic strategies in collaboration with the Director of Development and management team members.
  • Facilitate meetings with program staff and potential external partners to develop comprehensive proposals.
  • Support budget creation, including justification and collection of supporting documents.
  • Participate as needed in MEDA fundraising activities, including galas, individual donor fundraising events, and site visits.
  • Conduct regular prospect research to support MEDA’s full scope of funding needs and develop funder cultivation strategies.
  • With the development team, track and manage the Calendar to ensure proposals are executed on time.
  • With the development team, ensure that the Salesforce grants database accurately reflects the status of all grants.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree is a plus. Additional related experience may substitute for the degree requirement.
  • Successful track record for institutional (grant) fundraising for a nonprofit organization, with three to seven years of experience in grant writing.
  • Demonstrated success and experience in prospecting, writing, and securing government grants including local, state, and federal sources.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong facilitation and project management skills.
  • Ability to effectively collect, analyze, organize, distill, and present information.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and prioritize while working to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Knowledge of community development, housing, education, and/or other core areas of MEDA’s work is a significant plus.
  • Ability to work both independently and also collaborate as a team player.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Spanish language fluency (verbal and written) is a plus.

We pride ourselves in having a family-friendly work environment, promoting work-life balance, and spending time as a team through retreats and “fun days” to help us better serve our community.
