Mississippi State University is Hiring a Computer Support Specialist Near Starkville, MS

Position FunctionThis position reports directly to the System Administrator in the Bagley College of Engineering Deans Office. The primary duties include the installation, maintenance, and support of software systems and hardware systems in support of the Bagley College of Engineering, training faculty on technologies and system use, and to serve as the liaison to MSU Property Control for the Dean of Engineering Office. This position also provides assistance to and back-up to the BCoE System Administrator.

Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesThe essential duties listed are representative of major duties of this position. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs. Other duties may be assigned to be consistent with the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job. Not all of the duties may be assigned to a position.
  • Recommend, purchase, and install technology for the Bagley College of Engineering.
  • Train faculty and staff on the use of software and hardware.
  • Provide support in helping faculty to identify and integrate existing and new information technologies.
  • Work closely with Information Technology Services personnel in support of policies, hardware, and configurations maintained by the university.
  • Monitor faculty and staff needs and assist in providing appropriate resolution to those requests.
  • Maintain liaison with appropriate university units and within BCoE to keep abreast of policy and procedural changes.
  • Implement security measures and policies.
  • Assist with university and state property audits within the college.
  • Maintain computerized inventory records of all property belonging to the college and prepares periodic reports for internal and external reporting. Conduct regular audits to determine status and location of current property.
  • Support and provide back-up to the BCoE System Administrator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or a related field OR equivalent combination of degree and related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Mastery of video-streaming, electronic classroom, and online technologies.
  • One or more high-level programming languages such as C, C , Java.
  • Working knowledge of Windows, UNIX, and Linux client and server administration.
  • Good understanding of Local area networks, with emphasis on TCP/IP, firewalls, wireless and Ethernet.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve hardware and software problems on computers and audio/video equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, Adobe software, and other engineering and distance education related software packages. Working knowledge of WebEx, and computer screen capture, recording, and encoding software packages.
  • Knowledge of computing standards and hardware to aide in the purchase of computing devices.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and personal initiative.
Working Conditions and Physical EffortOccasional or light lifting required. Limited exposure to exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc.
Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposures to demands and pressures from persons other than supervisor.
Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
Job occasionally requires standing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
