Summary/Objective

Implement community conservation in Urban and developing areas to further conservation friendly development and responsible land management practicesImplement community conservation in Urban and developing areas to further conservation friendly development and responsible land management practices.

Essential Job Duties

  • Develop partnerships and cooperate with other local, state, and federal agencies, regional planning groups, watershed organizations, park boards, and includes creating and sustaining community partnerships.
  • Develop new partnerships that help broaden the conservation footprint and connect Missourians with nature.
  • Utilize the prioritization model to target and deliver community conservation to underserved populations and communities, including a focus on 19 schools in Boone County located within tier 1 conservation geographic areas.
  • Raise awareness of the benefits provided by healthy forest, fish, and wildlife resources. Promote conservation of these resources through technical assistance and encourage development that protects native forest fish and wildlife diversity. This includes a focus of engaging One Health in Columbia and at the Boone County Nature School.
  • Create and sustain pollinator plots with schools and community entities.
  • Lead naturalist programs and attend and lead Master Naturalist and community events.
  • Provide information, educational materials, and technical support to internal and external stakeholders regarding social, environmental, and economic impacts of urban sprawl and the benefits of alternatives.
  • Collaborate in community planning involving plat review, zoning codes and ordinances, greenway establishments, green space conservation, storm water master plans, and long-range land use master plans.
  • Work with Community Conservation Teams (CCT) to educate and build working relationships with developers, consultants, and local government and to advocate for the use of conservation development techniques. As part of the CCT, develop priority focus areas and implementation plans for the associated focal areas.
  • Administer cooperative agreements and prepare grant applications.
  • Stay current on conservation development principles, tools, methods, techniques, and designs through continuing education and research.
  • Provide training to staff to empower them to provide community conservation assistance in their work area.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Fisheries, Forestry, Wildlife Management, Biological Sciences, Environmental Planning, City Administration or Urban Planning or related field.
  • At least two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience.
  • Must maintain a valid, current driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of landscape architecture, ecology and/or biology, grant writing and public administration.
  • Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Ability to perform geospatial analysis.
  • Knowledge of community conservation principles, planning & zoning regulations, native landscape and watershed management.
  • Knowledge of municipal government structure, policy development procedures and urban planning.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and act quickly and decisively on the determined course of action.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of all types of groups, Department staff and the general public.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and assist in resolving conflicts.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with Department personnel and the general public.
  • Ability to develop and present programs to individuals and groups.
  • Ability to travel frequently and stay overnight occasionally.
  • Ability to work evenings, Saturdays and Sundays when needed.

Work Environment

  • Regularly work in a standard office environment.
  • Occasionally work in varying, inclement outdoor weather.
  • Occasionally exposed to loud noises which may require the use of hearing protection.

Physical Abilities

  • Remain in a stationary position up to 70% of the time.
  • Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more, and three-dimensional vision.
  • Regularly lift up to 5 pounds, correctly lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

Exemption Status/Special Notes

This position has been determined to be Exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.

Salaried and hourly employees are expected to use a mobile device-cellular phone for Department business, as needed.
