Summary/Objective

The Strategic Planning Coordinator works with department leaders to develop long-term goals and strategies to accomplish these goals. They assess the department’s goals and identify areas for improvement. Ensure systems to measure and monitor performance of plans.

Essential Job Duties

  • Work directly with department leadership to identify MDC’s short term and long-term goals. Assist leadership in identifying strengths, opportunities, opportunities and threats.
  • Direct leadership in the development of the strategic plan, including review and revision.
  • Oversee the process to ensure alignment of the strategic plan with statewide and regional operational plans and associated planning products including internal communication.
  • Develop and coordinate implementation of major organizational improvement initiates.
  • Ensure execution of strategic goals and initiatives.
  • Lead the development and management of internal and external dashboards and reporting tools.
  • Coach department leaders in the development of measurable objectives to guide planning.
  • Ensure integration of planning, budgeting, and performance reporting systems.
  • Review and revise the strategic and operational planning process.
  • Investigate and analyze issues and problems and develop recommendations for solutions.
  • Engage the Commission on review and approval of the department strategic plan.
  • Embody MDC leadership principles and styles. Effective communicator and adept in business analysis.

Ancillary Job Duties

  • Work in collaboration with Operational Excellence team and ensure coordination with continuous improvement to identify areas that need to be improved.
  • Proven leadership and management skills
  • Collaborate with other agencies and organizations to stay current with best management practices.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.S.) in public administration, business administration, business administration, organizational change, process improvement, or related field required.
  • Master's Degree (M.S.) in public administration, business administration, organizational change, process improvement, or related field desired.
  • At least five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Understanding of project proposal processes.
  • Understanding of organizational processes.
  • Understanding of computers and keyboarding, including use of Microsoft Office tools and SharePoint.
  • Strong reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to manage and facilitate meetings.
  • Management of financial, material, and personnel resources.
  • Systems analysis and systems evaluation.
  • Ability to maintain focus and intensity and remain optimistic and persistent even under adversity.
  • Ability to develop and sustain cooperative working relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and act quickly and decisively on the determined course of action.
  • Ability to handle multiple, diverse tasks of a complex nature and employ good time management techniques.
  • Ability to travel overnight and work varying hours and shifts.

Work Environment

  • Regularly work in outdoor environments where hot, cold, wet and/or humid conditions exist.

Physical Abilities

  • Remain in a stationary position up to 70% of the time.
  • Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Frequently communicate and exchange accurate information.
  • Clarity of vision and three-dimensional vision.
  • Regularly lift up to 5 pounds, correctly lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.

Exemption Status/Special Notes

This position has been determined to be Exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.

Salaried and hourly employees are expected to use a mobile device-cellular phone for Department business, as needed.
