General Function

GENERAL FUNCTION
The Residence Hall Host or Hostess performs assigned duties following specific guidelines to promote the safety of residents, monitor the physical facilities during night hours, and provide other services as directed to residents.
Description of Primary Duties

This position will work Monday through Friday from 12 midnight to 8:00 a.m.
The Residence Hall Host/Hostess position will work either a 10 month schedule (August through May) or work 12 months. Please specify your preference by answering the related question in the online application.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs safety duties by monitoring door access, the fire alarm system, and residents and guests entering the building, assisting the Hall Director and other officials in the appropriate and timely response to system-wide or building specific needs, emergencies, or other situations requiring immediate attention, and following proper procedures in calling staff to help with student needs.
2. Provides good customer service to the students by communicating effectively in response to questions, concerns, or emergencies and identifying and greeting a majority of building residents by name and face as each semester progresses.
3. Provides written documentation of incidents, maintenance or custodial needs, and any infractions of policies and regulations of Residence Life and Services or the University by preparing required reports as necessary.
4. Facilitates responsiveness to emergencies situations and other covered incidents by expediting communication to appropriate departmental or University staff.
5. Supports the operations of the front desk by performing some receptionist functions, as instructed, including telephone service, forwarding mail, and other clerical work as directed.
6. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
7. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses and activities, and attending training and/or courses required by the Residence Hall Director.
8. Supports the overall success of the Department of Residence Life and Services by performing all other essential duties as assigned by the Residence Hall Director.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience: One year of general office or general security experience is required.
Skills: The ability to relate to high school or college-age students is required.
Proven ability to communicate effectively and follow instructions is required. The ability to confront policy violations and handle such confrontations appropriately and according to departmental guidelines is required. The ability to complete routine office procedures, including filing, answering the telephone, entering charges on students' financial accounts, and checking out equipment by using the Residence Life WebDesk system is required. Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
Effort: Employees in this job classification (job title) are designated as essential employees and must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather.
